We know what we’ve got to do if we win on Wednesday, and we’re in a fantastic spot. We’ve got to construct on the positives from tonight.”

Just about each match because Wayne Rooney’s arrival in D.C. and the opening of Audi Field has carried superior stakes. Nevertheless United really do not show up to be struggling from significant-game tiredness as they stretched an unbeaten run to seven matches. Pretty the reverse.

“No one wishes to be near the middle or base of the league, and just actively playing for the enjoyment of it,” reported Rooney, who professional a lot of pressure in his times starring for England and Manchester United. “You want pressure times. You want to feel that pressure. And I assume it is significant, what we’re doing, we’ve got that pressure but we’re thriving on it and we’re picking up benefits and wins.”

As SuperSport United are set to visit Congolese side, TP Mazembe in honour of the first leg of their 2017 CAF Confederation Cup final, CEO Stan Matthews wants to see good officiating from the referees.

The Amatsantsantsa boss is hoping to see a fair encounter and credited his players for resilience in tough situations along the way.

Matthews recalls the day when Orlando Pirates met the Ravens in the CAF Champions League when the late goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa had to save two penalties for Bucs in a 1-0 defeat in 2013.

Seychelles referee, Bernard Camille, was the man tasked with officiating the tie and was also in charge when the South African Premier Soccer League outfit drew 1-1 against Tunisia’s Club Africain in the semi-final at home last month.

“To have had luck along the way and the character of the boys that they showed to overcome what we feel was not the best officiating over the two legs against Club Africain, I think it was fantastic,” said Matthews to Kick-Off.

“Hopefully, we will get a reasonable official. My mind goes back to Orlando Pirates playing against TP Mazembe and the late Senzo pulling off multiple penalty saves.

“One just needs to see the final is officiated in a fair and proper way. Strong officiating is good, fair officiating is better and that’s what we want, then I think we can trade blows with Mazembe.

“We did it home and away in the group stages. We came from a 2-0 down against them there and we showed good character so this team has a lot of self belief at the moment.”

The highly anticipated encounter will be staged at Stade du TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi on Sunday at 14:30 (CAT).

Platinum Stars overcame Maritzburg United 3-1 on penalties following a goalless draw in the Telkom Knockout Cup Last 16 match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

The victory sees Dikwena booking their place in the quarter-finals, while the Team of Choice are eliminated from the tournament.

Stars shot-stopper Dino Visser was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first-half as he kept Maritzburg attackers at bay.

The 28-year-old made a decent save to deny Maritzburg striker Evans Rusike in the 24th minute as Maritzburg pressed for the opening goal.

The home side should have broken the deadlock just before the half-time break after the Stars defence was exposed.

However, Rusike, who represented Zimbabwe at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Gabon, missed the target.

Stars then stood firm at the back in the remaining minutes of the first-half and the score was 0-0 at the interval.

Visser was called into action a few minutes after the restart as Maritzburg continued to search for the opening goal.

The former Polokwane City shot-stopper pulled off a good save to deny Maritzburg striker Lebohang Maboe.

As the match progressed, Stars pressed Maritzburg and the visitors had a chance to break the deadlock in the 71st minute.

However, Zambian international Brian Mwila missed the target after controlling the ball very well in the Mariztburg half.

This proved to be the last chance of the match in regulation time and the game went into extra-time.

The only chance of the first-half of extra-time went to Stars full-back Siyabonga Zulu, who missed the target from a free-kick.

Rusike also missed the target from a promising positiion in the second-half of extra-time and a penalty shootout followed following a goalless draw.

Visser was the hero for Stars, who won 3-1 on penalties after the shot-stopper denied Liam Youlley and Mohau Mokate from the spot-kick.

Kitwe United lambastes poor officiating at Zambian FA

by
Phumzile Ngcatshe

Friday Oct 20, 2017. 19:00

Zambian Division One League side, Kitwe United have lodged a complaint to the Football Association of Zambia over poor officiating.

The protest comes after United‘s 1-0 loss last Saturday against Kansanshi Dynamos in Solwezi.

Kansanshi booted Kitwe from the top of the FAZ Division 1, Zone 2 log table after a first half penalty awarded by Chingola referee Louis Macha gifted them the three points.

LAMPARD: I THOUGHT I WAS GOOD – BUT PLAYING AGAINST ETO’O WAS AN “EYE-OPENER”

Kansanshi have 55 points, two above Kitwe after 27 matches and Kitwe boss Gabriel Akayombokwa said the Buchi Boys were aggrieved by the manner in which the penalty was awarded.

“We have lodged a complaint to FAZ over poor officiating. We are also aware that the assistant referee works for Kansanshi Mines,” Akayombokwa said.

There are only three games left to play before the Zone Two season closes as FAZ is yet to make a decision on the complaint.

Eric Bailly missed Liverpool v United due to injury – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Manchester United‘s Eric Bailly

by
Graeme Jackson

Sunday Oct 15, 2017. 13:00

Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly missed Manchester United’s match against Liverpool yesterday due to an unspecified injury.

The Red Devils held their old rivals to a goalless draw in an underwhelming Premier League clash at Anfield.

Jose Mourinho fielded Chris Smalling as Phil Jones’ central defensive partner, with Bailly surprisingly not even named on the bench.

The Potuguese manager revealed that Bailly, along with Marouane Fellaini and Marcus Rashford, picked up knocks during the international break earlier in the month.

“I don’t think we have many options,” Mourinho told Sky Sports ahead of the game against Liverpool.

“Fellaini was injured with the national team, Bailly was injured with the national team and Rashford was injured with the national team. We don’t have many options.

“I never complain about that. I was just mentioning it to you because the next question is maybe ‘why is Rashford not playing?’, ‘why is Bailly not even on the bench?’.

“But, okay, since the moment we know the players we have available, we thought about the match and we thought about our options and we made these decisions.”

Good evening and welcome to AfricanFootball.com for our live coverage of the 2017 MTN8 Final between Cape Town City and SuperSport United from the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, on Saturday 14 October 2017.

Cape Town City: Walters; Seedat, Johannes, Fielies, Mkhize – Matsi (Moseamedi 90+1′), Modise (Putsche 66′), Nodada – Lakay, Masina, Majoro (Obinna 74′)

SuperSport United: Williams; Kekana, Gould, Daniels, Modiba (Myeni 79′) – Furman, Letsholonyane (Mnyamane 54′), Mokoena – Phala, Brockie (Wome 69′), Grobler

LIVE UPDATES:

SuperSport United win 4-2 on penalties.

SuperSport United come out on top from the spot! Ronwen Williams denying Lyle Lakay and Judas Moseamedi from 12 yards. Matsatsantsa faultless from the spot with Dove Wome sealing the deal to secure R8 million in prize money for the club.

122′ Full-Time in Extra-Time: Cape Town City 1-1 SuperSport United  – PENALTIES to follow…

120′ Two minutes added.

117′ CHANCE! Late chance for Moseamedi to wrap things up, but with time and space inside the area he scuffs his shot wide of goal.

110′ Into the final 10 minutes and understandably both teams are frightened to make a mistake! Furthermore, Daniels keeps pulling up with cramp – only adding to Tinkler woes.

106′ Second stanza of extra-time is underway.

105+1′ Half-Time in Extra-Time: Cape Town City 1-1 SuperSport United

105′ Minute added to the first half of extra-time. Will there be a winner here or will the lottery of penalties decide this one?

102′ Fatigue starting to creep into the bodies of both teams, with players hitting the deck due to cramp. Nervy moments these.

99′ Role reversal since Mnyamane was forced off the pitch with SuperSport now sitting deep – welcoming pressure from the Citizens. Wome with a chance on the counter, but his turn and shot flies over the crossbar.

91′ We are underway in Extra-Time.

90+4′ Full-Time: Cape Town City 1-1 SuperSport United. Extra Time to decide the winner?

90′ Four minutes added to the half.

83′ SuperSport reduced to 10-men as Mnyamane is forced off the pitch due to injury. Having made all their subs, Matsatsantsa are forced to play the remainder of the game with a man short.

80′ GOAL! Grobler with a superb through ball to set Mnyamane free on goal and the forward makes no mistake to pull the two teams level.

73′ Nervy moment at the back for Daniels and Williams, but again, City fail to capitalize. Game of very fine margins, especially in the final few minutes.

70′ Into the final 20 minutes we go and Cape Town City are still holding onto their narrow lead. Matsatsantsa becoming more and more desperate.

65′ Chance at the other end of the pitch now as Williams is forced into a good save to deny Majoro once more. Chances coming at a rapid pace.

63′ SHOT! Mnyamane fires a fierce left-footed shot just wide of goal. Game starting to open up!

60′ CHANCE! Great chance for Majoro to double City’s lead but the former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates forward guides his shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

57′ SHOT! Brockie finally registers his first shot in anger – powering a fierce effort straight at Walters. But it is easy for Walters  as the ball is straight at him.

53′ Thabo Mnyamane set to come on for SuperSport. Could he provide the spark missing  from Eric Tinkler’s troops. Looks like Yeye will be sacrificed – City done well to limit the former Bafana Bafana midfielder.

49′ Good start to the half by SuperSport, but one feels that City will be happy to absorb some early pressure as they did in the first half.

46′ The second half is underway on South Africa’s East Coast.

45+1′ Half-Time: Cape Town City 1-0 SuperSport United

45′ One minute added to the half.

44′ Grobler is the first into the referee’s book as we approach the interval. Matsatsantsa forced to do all the playing with City happy to play on the counter.

37′ SAVE! Good stop at the other end of the pitch by Williams to deny Lakay at the other end of the pitch. Things heating up in Durban.

34′ CHANCE! Great chance for SuperSport following a mistake by Walters, but Seedat spares the goal-minder’s blushes with an incredible last ditch clearance to deny Grobler from close range.

30′ Half-hour played in Durban and it’s Cape Town City who lead. Matsatsantsa with all the early pressure, but the Citizens made good use of their chance.

23′ GOAL! Masina opens the scoring against the run of play for the Citizens! Seedat feeding the attacker who finishes with aplomb from a tight angle, 1-0.

18′ More pressure applied by Matsatsantsa from successive set-pieces, but City defend well as SuperSport continue to ramp up the pressure on South Africa’s East Coast.

13′ SAVE! Chance for the Citizens as Masina finds space down the right flank, but Williams is quick off his line to save at Majoro’s feet.

11′ Fast start to the game as both teams go in search of an early goal. SuperSport have looked the better team with Walters called into frequent action.

7′ Walters quick off his line to gather at Grobler’s head. SuperSport pose a huge threat on transition and that was quite noticeable just then.

5′ Early corner-kick for SuperSport United whipped in from the far side of the pitch, but it is too easy for Walters who plucks the ball from the air.

3′ Pitch not in the best condition – but considering the amount of rain on the East Coast over the past few days, the ground staff have done a stellar job!

1′ Kick-off!

– Cold, wet and windy in Durban this evening – similar to the scenes in the final between Orlando Pirates and Platinum Stars in 2013.

– For SuperSport United it is a third successive domestic final, having clinched success in the Nedbank Cup at the very same venue a few months ago.

– Inching ever closer to kick-off in what is a repeat of last season’s Telkom Knockout Final – the Citizens emerging 2-1 winners in December last year.

Manchester United can win the title – Eric Bailly – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly

by
Graeme Jackson

Monday Oct 09, 2017. 19:00

Manchester United can win the Premier League title if they continue their strong start to the season, says Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly.

Bailly has been a regular in the heart of United’s defence thus far in 2017/18, though he missed out on their last match, a 4-0 home win over Crystal Palace.

With the Ivorian’s help, the Red Devils have kept six clean sheets from seven games – but they will be more stringently tested when they face hated rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

“This year there is more desire, more success at everything we do,” Bailly told United Review.

“It’s important to see the team starting off well in top form, and I think that with the work we’ve done, and the work by the manager and the staff, we’ll continue the way we’ve begun and that will lead us to the Premier League title.”

Bailly will hope to return to Jose Mourinho’s starting XI for the clash against Liverpool, which kicks off at 13h30 CAT on Saturday.

Tinkler proud of CCC semifinalists SuperSport United

by
Austin Ditlhobolo

Tuesday Sep 26, 2017. 12:00

SuperSport United head coach Eric Tinkler is pleased to have guided his team to the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup semifinals.

Two goals by Thuso Phala helped the South African side hold Zambian side Zesco to a 2-2 draw in the quarterfinal second-leg clash at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday.

As a result, SuperSport qualified for the last four on the away goals rule after the tie ended in a 2-2 stalemate on aggregate with John Ching’Andu and David Owino having netted for Zesco.

“I’m very proud of the boys‚” Tinkler told The Sowetan.

“They fought hard and showed great character and getting that late winner was extremely satisfiying.

“It was a nerve-wracking finish and in the latter stages the referee wasn’t doing anything to help us and they were looking to waste time,” he continued.

“That is what made it so gratifying to win in the way we did. The boys just kept going. We need to go there‚ I had said before it would be a fight and it was.

“And the boys fought the whole way.”

SuperSport will now take on Tunisian outfit Club Africain in the two-legged semifinals between September and October, 2017.

Despite their push to get a win, Bloemfontein Celtic drew their fifth Absa Premiership match 0-0 against Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Coach Veselin Jelusic’s troops now sit at the 10th spot with six points from five league matches.

The highly-anticipated contest had a bright start for the visitors in the opening 10 minutes and their dominance showed they wanted an early lead, but they were not decisive in front of goal.

However, their first effort at goal came when Lantshene Phalane picked up the ball in midfield and with limited options decided to shoot from around 25-30 metres, but his effort went wide of goal.

In a game lacking clear-cut chances in front of goal, Kurt Lentjies played a beautiful ball into the box for Mpho Mvelase in the 30th minute, but the latter failed to control the ball and Siwelele cleared their lines.

Following a corner kick by Lentjies in the 40th minute, Moeketsi Sekola connected well with the delivery, but he was denied by the crossbar, with keeper Patrick Tignyemb beaten.

There were no goals in the opening half, but coach Veselin Jelusic’s men started the second on a high and pressed for a goal.

However, both sides calmed down a bit after a good start from Celtic, as coach Teboho Moloi’s men was responded well with two chances, but nothing came out of the efforts.

With three minutes to go, substitute Lerato Manzini would hit the woodwork after receiving the ball on the edge of the box and attempting to curl it towards the far corner.

In the dying minutes, Tignyemb denied Mdlinzo after the latter had a brilliant chance with a free header from the centre of the box.

Resulting from the deadlock, the Chilli Boys now occupy the 11th spot with as many points from six matches in their campaign thus far.

Although his contract was terminate by Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League side, CAPS United, striker Tafadzwa Rusike says he is hopeful he will stay in the Zimbabwean PSL.

His contract was terminated on Saturday and he revealed he was shocked by the move.

Rusike said he was unaware why he had been dismissed although he suspected his continued absence due to injuries might have influenced the club’s decision.

GHANA STILL HAVE HOPE FOR RUSSIA 2018 – RAPHAEL DWAMENA

The striker has made sporadic appearances for the team this season, mainly struggling with a groin injury and had been ruled out of the big Harare derby on Sunday owing to an ankle injury. And on the eve of the match he was dismissed from the club.

Speaking to the Newsday website, he said he remained committed to the club and hoped the decision would be reversed.

“I have got great respect for the president [Farai Jere] and will remain loyal to Caps United. I have been with them since I was very young,” said Rusike.

“To me, Caps United is my home, it’s the team that groomed me into the player that I am today. I feel indebted to them.

“Sometimes I have played while I am not fully fit because I love the team. I suspect that the president might have been infuriated that of late I have not been playing a part because of injuries.

“To be honest, I have been afflicted by injuries time and again this season. Personally, I don’t even know what is happening in my life.

“I have even gone to Prophet Walter Magaya and when I visited him recently, I could see there was a big change.”

Algeria’s Mahrez tried to engineer move to Man United – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez

by
Graeme Jackson

Monday Sep 04, 2017. 15:00

According to the Daily Star, Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez tried to engineer a move to Manchester United on transfer deadline day last week.

Mahrez, who has made no secret of his desire to leave Leicester City, was excused from Algeria’s World Cup qualifying camp and flew back to Europe to try and organise a last-day transfer before the window closed last Thursday.

The Fennec Foxes winger was linked with the likes of Roma (who had several bids rejected by Leicester), Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea, though a move never materialised.

The Daily Star now claims that the representatives of the player had tried to induce a move to United on the deadline day, but the Red Devils never made an official offer – despite reported interest from manager Jose Mourinho.

Mahrez missed Algeria’s 3-1 defeat away to Zambia on Saturday and it remains to be seen whether he will be available for tomorrow night’s return match in Constantine.

SuperSport United failed to use their home advantage when they drew 1-1 against Maritzburg United in their MTN8 first leg, semifinal clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night.

Two second half strikes from Thuso Phala and Lebohang Maboe ensured the teams will be level ahead of the second leg.

Despite a tough encounter in the opening 20 minutes of the match, both coaches looked to employ a defensive approach.

However, the 33rd minute saw Devon Saal wasting good moves by the visitors in the heart of the park as they continued to keep Eric Tinkler’s side under pressure.

However, few minutes later, Maritzburg keeper Bongani Mpandle was called to produce a brilliant save to deny SuperSport striker Bradley Grobler.

Towards the end of the opening half, Phala caused all sorts of troubles for Fadlu Davids’ men, yet there are no goals in the opening half.

On the return from the interval, it was the KwaZulu-Natal side pushing for an opener, but their decision making in the final third was not convincing.

In the 53rd minute, Phala opened the scoring after receiving a defence-splitting pass and blasted a powerful shot through Mpandle to hand Tinkler’s side a 1-0 lead.

With less than 18 minutes remaining, Williams produced a wonderful save to deny Deolin Mekoa from a long range effort. A well struck shot by the left winger.

The final 10 minutes of the encounter had no clear cut opportunities, but it was the Team of Choice which had an upper hand.

Davids’ men continued to pile pressure on their hosts and a wonderful pass reached Maboe in the box, whose effort was too powerful for goalkeeper Williams.

However, with added minutes in the injury time, both sides failed to create chances to secure a winning goal as they shared the spoils.

The teams will meet for the second leg on the ninth of September, as the two Premier Soccer League giants look to secure a spot in the final.

Kaizer Chiefs were beaten 2-1 by visitors SuperSport United in an Absa Premiership clash at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

It’s the Amakhosi’s second defeat at the hands of Matsatsantsa in the space of 11 days, having been beaten 1-0 by Eric Tinkler’s side in the quarterfinals of the MTN8 earlier in the month.

The match had a major twist as early as the seventh minute, with Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho given a straight red card for a last-man challenge on Bradley Grobler on the edge of the box.

United soon took advantage of their numerical advantage, with Thuso Phala and Dove Wome exchanging passes before the latter provided a cross from Aubrey Modiba to score with a looping header on 13 minutes.

The Soweto side responded by sending on Daniel Cardoso – though it was in place of fellow central defender Lorenzo Gordinho, leaving midfielder Willard Katsande to partner the substitute in a makeshift centre-back pairing.

On 20 minutes it was very nearly 2-0 to SuperSport, with the Amakhosi needing Hendrick Ekstein to clear off the line after Tsepo Masilela and Brilliant Khuzwayo had a nasty collision while trying to defend a cross – the ball bounced toward the line but Ekstein’s intervention prevented an own goal.

But there was a casualty from the incident, as Masilela limped off the pitch a few minutes later to be replaced by Philani Zulu – Chiefs’ second change within the first half hour.

Matsatsantsa doubled their lead on the stroke of half time, with a superb through ball from Teboho Mokoena putting Grobler in on goal, and the striker duly tucked the chance away to make it 2-0 at the break.

Just before the midway point of the second half Chiefs pulled a goal back: Ramahlwe Mphahlele crossed from the right, Siphiwe Tshabalala put a cushioned header into the danger area and Gustavo Paez expertly finished the chance to halve the deficit.

Paez’s strike sparked some hope that the Amakhosi could claim something from the game in spite of their disadvantage, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation. Chiefs will only be in action again next month after the international break, while SuperSport will face Maritzburg United in the first leg of the MTN8 semifinals this weekend.

Kaizer Chiefs (0) 1 (Paez 66’)

SuperSport United (2) 2 (Modiba 13’, Grobler 45+1’)

Chippa United defeated AmaZulu 2-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday.

As a result, the Chilli Boys moved to the fourth spot on the league table, while the Chilli Boys dropped down to position seven on the standings.

Usuthu should have grabbed an early goal, but Michael Morton’s header went just over the crossbar a few minutes into the encounter.

The hard-working midfielder then found some space outside the Chippa box in the 26th minute and he forced goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo into a comfortable save.

However, lapse of concentration inside the AmaZulu box in the 38th minute handed the Chilli Boys an opportunity to break the deadlock.

The 2014/15 Absa Premiership Golden Boot winner Moeketsi Sekola made no mistake as he scored from close range to make it 1-0 to Chippa.

The Chilli Boys then pressed for another goal, but they were denied by AmaZulu goalkeeper Boalefa Pule, who produced a good save in the 40th minute.

The home side managed to contain AmaZulu in the remaining minutes of the first-half and the score was 1-0 to Chippa at the interval.

Usuthu defender Simphiwe Mtsweni was booked a few minutes into the second-half as the Chilli Boys pressed AmaZulu in search of their second goal.

AmaZulu were able to launch promising attacks, but they lost possession in the final third without seriously testing Chippa goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo.

The momentum was with Chippa in the dying minutes of the match and they managed to double their lead thanks to Abel Mabaso’s goal.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns defender hit the back of the net to make it 2-0 to Chippa following a good move by Kurt Lentjies in the 81st minute.

Usuthu could not pull one back in the closing stages of the match as Chippa stood firm at the back and they emerged 2-0 winners on the night.
