South African side Bidvest Wits are said to have shown interest in Christian Epoupa.

The Cameroonian striker is currently on the books of Dynamos, who are campaigning in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League (ZPSL).

The highly-rated player has been linked with South African club Ajax Cape Town in the past.

Wits and another South African side Polokwane City are also believed to be keen to sign the attacker.

Dynamos chairman Keni Mubaiwa has been quoted as confirming talks for the forward with clubs in South Africa.

“A number of clubs from South Africa have made contact with Christian,” he told News Day.

“Some were here in the past few days for negotiations and others have been talking to us on the phone.

“We have not agreed with anyone because of the price. We have put our value on the player, which the teams are saying they cannot meet,” he continued.

“The good thing on our part is that we are not desperate to sell, so we will try to get the full value of what we think our player is worth.

Epoupa scored 12 goals in the ZPSL this past season.

Roy Hodgson: Bakary Sako can play as a striker – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Crystal Palace attacker Bakary Sako

Graeme Jackson

Sunday Nov 26, 2017. 09:00

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that he plans on playing Malian winger Bakary Sako as a striker.

With the Eagles fighting against the prospect of relegation from the Premier League, former England manager Hodgson is looking for creative solutions to improve the team’s attack.

The return from injury of Belgian striker Christian Benteke is certainly a major boost, as is the continued excellence of Ivory Coast attacker Wilfried Zaha.

And rather than spend millions of pounds in the January transfer window to boost their striker options, Palace manager Hodgson reckons Sako is showing signs in training of being able to switch to a centre-forward.

“Sako has made enormous strides as a forward,” said the veteran manager.

“He sees himself as a left-winger, but we have actually been doing a lot of work with him as a centre-forward and he is a player who has definitely shown in the training sessions he is really picking up on what we are looking for.”

The prolific marksman has a good season thus far in the colours of his Spanish club Villarreal, who are punishing for a top four finish in the La Liga.

Bakambu, 26, has found the back of the net eight times in 11 La Liga games and he’s among the top goalscorers in the league.

Only FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi (12) and Valencia forward Simone Zaza (9) have scored more La Liga goals than the DR Congolese international this season.

Bakambu’s exploits for the Yellow Submarine have not gone unnoticed according to latest reports coming out of Spain.

Spanish media outlet Marca have reported that West Ham United are one of a number of English Premier League clubs interested in signing in-form Bakambu during the January transfer window.

Marca says that the Hammers made an offer for the frontman in the summer, but were unable to match the price tag put on the centre-forward’s head.

The London-based outfit are now ready to revive their interest in Bakambu, who was a key player for DR Congo during their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The report adds that the Hammers’ English top flight rivals West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United are also keeping tabs on the France-born player.

It remains to be seen whether Villarreal will agree to sell one of their most prized assets midway through the current 2017/18 campaign.

Tanzania’s Young Africans are looking for their Zimbabwean player in Donald Ngoma who has reportedly gone AWOL.

The Warriors striker is in trouble with his Tanzanian club as he left the side without consent and media reports suggest he is facing disciplinary action after he didn’t report for duty.

Ngoma is out of action after picking up an injury and has missed five matches since the Premier League season kicked off.

The News Day website in Zimbabwe reports that he returned home in Zimbabwe last week without informing his club.

According to YANGA’s information officer, Dismas Ten, he said the club is surprised by reports that Ngoma left the country without permission.

“We have heard that he has left, to go to Zimbabwe but we have no information because he did not communicate with us. If the reports are true, then we will be disappointed and we will obviously take action,” Dismas said.

Meanwhile, an unnamed source within the club’s hierarchy added that they are ready to axe the player for indiscipline.

“He thinks he is bigger than the club. He feels like God in the club and can do what he wants,” adds the News Day’s source.

“For example right now he is in Zimbabwe, he left without informing us but he will want to get paid at the end of the month. Who would want to keep a player like that?.”

Ngoma joined YANGA in 2015, where he became an instant hero after his goals helped the team to win the league.

Egyptian giants Zamalek to pay Ghanaian striker Junior Agogo $450 000

by
Phumzile Ngcatshe

Sunday Nov 12, 2017. 15:00

Latest reports involving Zamalek and ex-Ghana striker Junior Agogo is that FIFA has given the Egyptian side three months to pay the player.

The world’s football governing body has handed the White Knights a three-month period to pay their former striker’s $450 000 unpaid wages.

Agogo joined Zamalek from English side Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2008, but terminated his contract with the Whites just nine months after joining them due to unpaid dues.

The former Black Stars international featured on 11 occasions, scoring just three goals for the team and took the club to FIFA to settle the matter.

Earlier this year, and after the striker filed a complaint against the Whites, Agogo received a letter from FIFA ordering Zamalek to pay him his remaining wages which valued around $450,000.

Kingfut.com reports that the club’s board decided to invite the player or his agent to come to Cairo to solve this issue, assuring that a bank account will be made for the Ghanaian to deposit his late dues.

Moreover, the board also pointed out that the three-month period starts after the club officially receives FIFA’s decision.

Should the Cairo giants fail to pay their former player, disciplinary actions by FIFA will be taken against them.

Bidvest Wits striker Gabadinho Mhango has issued an apology after an incident which involved him spitting at AmaZulu midfielder Michael Morton.

The Malawian forward says he deeply regrets the incident and is currently awaiting the Premier Soccer League’s verdict after he was captured on camera appearing to spit at Morton.

Usuthu went on to win the league encounter 3-1 on September 20 at the Princess Magogo Stadium and the former Bloemfontein Celtic striker expressed regret in a statement.

“I was involved in an incident that should have not happened in the beautiful game of football. I offended Michael Morton and AmaZulu FC,” Mhango wrote in a self-issued statement.

“I also disrespected my club, and above all, I disrespected the beautiful game of football. To all, I apologise unequivocally.

“The spitting incident should not have happened. Because of disciplinary action pending against me by both my club and the PSL, I was advised not to make any statements until such time as these processes were concluded.

“I have taken full responsibility for my actions in both disciplinary processes and now that they have been concluded, I can finally speak publicly about it.

“I have also met with Michael Morton, spoken to him about the incident and offered my heartfelt apologies to him and for provoking his reaction.

“I apologise to all that I have offended with my actions, and I pray and hope that you will all understand that whilst I was wrong, I am only human, and that you can all forgive me for my actions.”

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Vincent Aboubakar- Cameroon striker out to keep up scoring form – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Porto’s Vincent Aboubakar celebrates

Graeme Jackson

Cameroon striker Vincent Aboubakar will look to continue his strong scoring form this season when Porto face Boavista in a league clash on Saturday night.

The 25-year-old Indomitable Lions forward has scored seven goals in nine Primeira Liga appearances this season (plus two assists), as well as three goals in the UEFA Champions League.

Vincent Aboubakar has been the main beneficiary of the fine form of fellow Africans Moussa Marega (Mali; seven goals, one assist) and Yacine Brahimi (Algeria; three goals, two assists), as well as Mexican forward Jesus Manuel Corona (two goals, two assists).

The quartet have formed a potent attacking force for Porto, who have picked up 25 points from a possible 27 in Portugal’s top flight this season.

Porto have not won the Primeira Liga since 2012/13, having to stomach a period of domination for arch rivals Benfica.

Yet with Aboubacar in fine form, they will be confident of returning the title to the Estadio do Dragao, as they already have a four-point lead over nearest chasers Sporting Lisbon.

The Indomitable Lions striker notably signed a new contract with Porto earlier this month to end speculation linking him with the likes of Besiktas and Newcastle United.

Aboubacar will also be expecting a call-up from Hugo Broos ahead of Cameroon’s impending 2018 World Cup qualifier against Zambia next month.

Nigerian striker Success staying put at Watford FC – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Watford FC’s Nigerian international Isaac Success will not be leaving the English Premier League (EPL) despite his lack of game time this season.

The 21-year-old striker, who joined Watford from Spanish outfit Granada last year, is yet to feature in Watford’s first two league games of the season.

The English club’s head coach Marco Silva has since revealed why Success has not been getting some game time.

“This situation: He’s a young boy and boy who needs to adapt to this football and to our ideas as well,” Silva said on Own Goal Nigeria.

“We tried to put that to him as soon as possible because he’s one player we believe in as a project – as a Watford project.

“Until now I don’t have a decision. He stays with us, he works hard and tried to find his space in the team. It’s what I want him to do,” he added.

“It surprises me, this. Until now I haven’t spoken with anybody about the situation.”

Success made 19 league appearances for Watford during the 2016/17 campaign and he netted once in the process under coach Walter Mazzarri.

Prior to that season he had netted six goals in 30 Spanish La Liga matches for Granada during the 2015/16 campaign.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says Egyptian striker will score more goals

by
Phumzile Ngcatshe

Wednesday Aug 16, 2017. 16:00

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has backed Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah to bag more than 10 goals in the 2017/18 English Premiership.

Carragher has tipped Salah to succeed after netting his first goal in the EPL against Watford last Saturday, which the Reds went on to draw 3-3.

Following his impressive performance, Carragher believes Salah can reach double figures in terms of goals for Jurgen Klopp’s men if his teammates understand him well.

“He’s a wide man who looks obsessed with scoring goals in terms of making that run to put himself through, and the big thing about wide players,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“If you want to be successful you’ve got to be getting double figures. Certainly at a top club.

“There’s too many wide players who will go a season scoring one or two goals, and the reason is because they hug the touchline, but never come away from the touchline.

“At times I’ve said I’d like him maybe to come a little bit wider, just to create that space. People may work him out if he plays so narrow, [then] there’s no space to run.

“But there’s no doubt with him and (Sadio) Mane on the other side, not classic wingers getting down the line and getting crosses in, those two players will score goals as we saw at the weekend.”

Nigeria international Christian Obiozor hopes to impress in his first season with Orlando Pirates as he targets 15 goals during the upcoming 2017/18 campaign.

The tall striker recently joined the South African giants from Nigerian side Enyimba on a long-term deal.

“Pirates are like Real Madrid. It’s a club that wants to win trophies all the time. In order for you to do that, you have to give 100%,” Obiozor told the Sunday Times.

“My agent and I met with the chairman (Irvin Khoza) last week. He has a good relationship with the chairman of Enyimba (Felix Anyasi-Agwu).

“Chairman Khoza told me a lot about the club and made me aware that an Enyimba player [Onyekachi Okonkwo] once came here and played for Pirates,” he added.

The 22-year-old centre forward stated that he is aware of the expectations at Pirates, who have won the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title four times.

“A season without a trophy is sad for the players. By the grace of God this is going to be a good season for Pirates. The coach [Kjell Jonevret] gave me a word of encouragement. He talked to me as his son, saying ‘this season we need to push’ and I said ‘Ok Sir’,” he revealed.

Obiozor is eager to emulate his countryman Raphael Chukwu, who was a prolific striker for South African side Mamelodi Sundowns.

“What Chukwu did for Sundowns motivates me. If I can get 15 goals this season I will be very happy for myself. By the grace of God, it will happen,” he explained.

“As a striker, when you come to a club you have to set targets. Otherwise what is the point?.”

Hugo Broos warns Cameroon striker to look at his discipline – 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers

Cameroon manager Hugo Broos has issued a warning to Clinton Njie regarding the player’s discipline.

The Belgian manager spoke about the Olympique Marseille midfielder’s attitude on the field of play.

Njie was a notable absentee when Broos announced his squad for their first 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier next month against Morocco.

Although the 2017 AFCON winning coach with the Indomitable Lions offered a ringing endorsement of Njie’s qualities, he warned that he needs to show discipline to be part of his squad.

ZAMBIA TAKE ON GERMANY FOR QUARTERFINAL BERTH

“Njie Clinton is not here because of poor discipline,” said Broos to the BCC.

“He is a good player with many qualities as we saw during the preparation games before the Africa Cup of Nations against the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe.

“But 10 days later during the first Nations Cup game against Burkina Faso and also Guinea Bissau he was playing at only 50 percent.

“He must change his attitude and put in the work required if he is to turn the qualities he possesses into success at the top level.

“Even Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi are always working hard; him thinking that he’s the best doesn’t work, it doesn’t work in Marseille either.

“He is more on the bench than on the field of play. He is a player with the qualities to play in Marseilles; it is his responsibility because he is not playing.

“I said this already to him in Gabon. I hope he will understand because he is a good player.”

The 2017 African champions are currently in camp preparing to face Morocco on 10 June before travelling to Russia for the FIFA Confederations Cup.
