Baroka fight back to deny Stars – ABSA Premiership 2017/18

by

Platinum Stars were twice pegged back by Baroka FC as the teams played to a 2-2 draw in an entertaining Absa Premiership match at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

Bakgaga continue to lead the top flight despite not having won a game since late September, while Dikwena move back to 15th place on goal difference and have at least put together a five-match unbeaten run.

Stars created the first half chance of the match inside the opening 10 minutes, but striker Bongi Ntuli only succeeded in hitting the side netting with an effort from a tight angle.

The teams then cancelled each other out for most of the first half, with few scoring opportunities created at either end.

However, on 35 minutes the visitors put together a fine passing move which saw Robert Ng’ambi tee up Katlego Otladisa, who showed great composure to pick his spot and stroke home a low shot to make it 1-0 to Stars.

Otladisa’s first goal in PSL football left Dikwena one up at the half-time break, but they still opted for a tactical change at the start of the second as Enocent Mkhabela replaced Raymond Monama in midfield.

Yet it was Baroka’s first substitute, Mpho Kgaswane, who made a major impact on the game, as he struck home a superb shot from outside the box on 58 minutes to draw the hosts level at 1-1.

Stars almost reclaimed the lead in the 74th minute when Ntuli beat Virgil Vries to a long ball over the top and got around the goalkeeper, but with defenders retreating to pressure him the striker wasn’t able to capitalise.

The match looked set to end 1-1, but two late goals added some further drama. First, on 87 minutes, Ng’ambi scrambled the ball home from close range after Vries couldn’t handle a cross from the right flank, but this was immediately cancelled out by a sublime volley from Robin Ngalande to leave the game locked at 2-2.

The teams will be back in league action next midweek, with Baroka away to Mamelodi Sundowns on December 5, while Stars will take on hosts Polokwane City the following day.

Platinum Stars draw at home but move to 15th spot – ABSA Premiership 2017/18

Platinum Stars failed to grab their second Absa Premiership win when they drew 0-0 against Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday night at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Despite the stalemate, the Rustenburg-based side now sit at the 15th spot on the log standings with eight points from 11 matches so far.

Although Dikwena had a bright start in the opening five minutes, Brian Mwila could not beat Patrick Tignyemb who made a save in the box at the second attempt.

With chances few and far between, towards the 20th minute Celtic’s Lantshene Phalane tried to beat Mbongeni Mzimela from a distance, but the keeper was equal to the task in the 27th minute.

Despite dominance by Roger De Sa’s men, their lack of sharpness in the final third meant the scores remained level at half time at 0-0.

In the second half, the hosts found the back of the net through Mwila’s header from a set piece, but it was disallowed as he came from an offside position.

However, it was Siwelele that looked threatening after the hour mark as they utitlised their wingers, yet Mzimela showed his aerial quality.

The 70th minute saw Stars’ skipper Vuyo Mere coming close to beating Tignyemb after a long pass found him behind Celtic’s defence, he showed a wonderful first touch but missed the target with the keeper to beat.

After introducing Kabelo Mahlasela and Tshegofatso Mabaso, Veselin Jelusic’s men upped the ante and the latter saw his effort saved by Mzimela, who conceded a corner in the 79th minute.

As both sides were running against time, Mere picked out an unmarked Robert Ng’ambi with a sublime pass, but the Malawian blasted his effort off target two minutes later.

With both camps fighting for a goal, their efforts in the dying minutes could not yield the desired results and it ended in a dull draw.

The stalemate elevates Phunya Sele Sele to the fourth spot with 16 points from 11 games.

Chippa held 1-1 by Stars – ABSA Premiership 2017/18

Edward Manqele of Free State Stars

by
Graeme Jackson

Wednesday Nov 22, 2017. 20:25

Chippa United were held to a 1-1 draw by hosts Free State Stars at Goble Park in the early Absa Premiership match on Wednesday evening.

Both goals arrived late in the game, with the hosts taking a lead against the run of play thanks to a strike from Edward Manqele, while the visitors quickly equalised through James Okwuosa.

The result sees both teams rise up the log, temporarily at least: Ea Lla Koto are up one spot to ninth with 12 points from 10 matches, while the Chilli Boys go up three positions to fifth with 15 points from 11 outings in the league.

Chippa enjoyed the early possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Their best effort at goal in the opening half hour came via a 24th-minute free kick from Kurt Lentjies which flew just over the crossbar.

Stars gradually claimed a foothold in the game and on 38 minutes they nearly claimed the lead, with winger Sinethemba Jantjie denied at close range by a superb save from Chippa goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.

Ea Lla Koto also created the first chance of the second half, with skipper Paulus Masehe getting on the end of a corner kick, only to see his effort travel over the target without troubling the ‘keeper.

Masehe had another go at goal – this time from long range – a few minutes later, but Akpeyi pulled off a good save, while shortly thereafter Chippa put Paseka Mako clean through, but he was unable to get the better of Badra Ali Sangare one-on-one.

On 64 minutes the Chilli Boys had another good opportunity when Phetso Maphanga teed up Lentjies, but he was unable to get the better of Sangare and was soon replaced by Moeketsi Sekola.

Sekola and the lively Mpho Mvelase continued to put Stars’ defence under pressure, but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock through substitute Edward Manqele in the 84th minute, with the striker coolly taking advantage of some slack defending.

Yet Ea Lla Koto’s lead was short lived, with the Chilli Boys equalising in the 86th minute: Menzi Masuku’s corner kick was headed home by defender James Okwuosa to see the match end 1-1.

Both teams will be in action again this weekend, with Stars away to Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa at home to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Free State Stars (0) 1 (Manqele 84’)

Chippa United (0) 1 (Okwuosa 86’)

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Faouzi Ghoulam – No confirmation of Algerian star’s future – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

by
Graeme Jackson

Wednesday Nov 15, 2017. 19:00

Faouzi Ghoulam continues his recovery from a major knee injury and there remains no confirmation of whether he will sign a new contract with Napoli.

The Algerian is set to be out of contract at Stadio San Paolo at the end of the current season.

Some reports in Italian media claim the 26-year-old will pen a new deal with the Naples club, while others claim he will see out his contract and choose from one of several suitors in the European summer.

Juventus, Chelsea and Liverpool were also strongly linked with a move for the left-back, but it remains to be seen whether their interest is quite as strong considering his current injured status.

Regardless, Ghoulam will have been disappointed at having missed out on Algeria’s matches against Nigeria and Central African Republic during the international break this month.

He was named in the initial squad by new coach Rabah Madjer, but obviously had to pull out following the cruciate knee injusy he sustained while playing for Napoli in the UEFA Champions League.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Christian Atsu – Ghana star’s progress to be stalled by injury? – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Newcastle United‘s Christian Atsu

by
Graeme Jackson

Monday Nov 13, 2017. 13:00

Ghanaian star Christian Atsu will be hoping the progress he has made this season does not come to a grinding halt due to injury.

The Black Stars winger sustained a minor thigh injury while playing for Newcastle United against Bournemouth earlier this month.

Despite concerns over the issue, Atsu was still called up for Ghana’s dead-rubber 2018 World Cup qualifier against Egypt on November 12.

Yet in training for the match, Atsu broke down and his minor injury has now been aggravated all the way to a reported thigh muscle tear.

Quite how long the player will be sidelined remains to be seen, but regardless of the duration, Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is said to be furious at having one of his key attacking players put at risk.

Atsu looks highly likely to miss out on the Magpies’ next match, a high-profile Premier League clash away to Manchester United on Saturday evening – let’s hope it is not the first of many.

Pharaohs out to further Black Stars woes – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Egypt will be aiming to add to Ghana’s recent woes when the two nations lock horns in a Group E 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday.

Kick-off is at 15h30 local time (17h30pm CAT).

The Pharaohs have already booked their ticket to next year’s showpiece in Russia, with Mohamed Salah’s 95th minute penalty against Congo sealing their return to the world stage for the first time since 1990.

The Liverpool ace, though, will play no part in this weekend’s clash with Hector Cuper opting to rest his talisman. Mohamed Abdel-Shafy and Ahmed Hegazi have also been ruled out of the clash in a match which is nothing but a mere formality.

Considering what happened at the same venue between the two teams four years ago – a 6-1 win for the hosts – Egypt will want to prove some sort of point, but the onus really falls on Ghana with the Black Stars eager to gain some sort of redemption following their failed qualifying campaign.

If the West African’s are to do so, they will have to do it without Thomas Partey with the in-form midfielder to serve a one match suspension.

Andre and Jordan Ayew will also play no part as they were not selected by Kwesi Appiah with Christian Atsu and Asamoah Gyan a doubt due to injury.

Maritzburg United goal-minder Richard Ofori highlighted the importance of the match for the hosts, despite their fate having already been sealed.

“Although, we couldn’t qualify to the World Cup, we need to make sure we win the game as well, especially at home [for pride],” Ofori told KickOff.com. “This is because when we went there we lost by two goals and now they’re coming to our home. We can’t sit back and lose the game.

“We need to wake up and win the game. Regarding what went wrong in the whole process, there is one thing about football. Sometimes you play your heart out but you can’t get the results.

“Sometimes, you hope to do your best and sometimes your best is not enough and another team will qualify. What we need to do is do our best for the future,” he concluded.

Goals from Salah and Abdallah Said guided Egypt to a 2-0 win in Alexandria 12 months ago.

Senegalese referee Malang Diedhiou will take charge of the clash.

Bonginkosi Ntuli’s early goal didn’t make any difference for Platinum Stars as they lost 2-1 to Bloemfontein Celtic in a Telkom Knockout quarterfinal match on Saturday at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

On the other hand, goals from Lantshene Phalane and Tshegofatso Mabaso were enough to dispatch Dikwena out of the competition.

Victor Letsoalo had a glorious opportunity to make it 1-0 in the 25th when his deflected shot in the box went over the cross bar.

However, it was Ntuli who broke the deadlock five minutes later after receiving a long pass into the box, and the burly forward chipped the oncoming Tignyemb to make it 1-0.

It was the hosts who were leading at half time.

Siwelele pushed for an equaliser in the second stanza and they levelled matters when Phalane netted with a fine left-footed set piece to beat Stars keeper Dino Visser in the 58th minute.

Ntuli missed a wonderful opportunity from a header after a great cross down the left flank, the goalscorer saw his effort going wide with just Tignyemb to beat in the 79th minute.

In the 80th minute, the visitors came back from behind to grab the lead through substitute Mabaso after brilliant play by Kabelo Mahlasela who beat three Dikwena defenders before setting up a cross.

Despite their efforts to find an equaliser, the hosts were not clinical upfront as they exit the competition they won in 2013.

Platinum Stars: (1) (Ntuli 30′)

Bloemfontein Celtic: (0) 2 (Phalane 58′, Mabaso 80′)

Platinum Stars: Visser, De Jongh, Mwedihanga, Zulu, Sithole, Mere, Ng’ambi, Mkhabela (Matlakala 87′), Links (Mwila 65′), Otladisa, Ntuli

Bloemfontein Celtic: Tignyemb, Pfumbidzai, Rikhotso, Ndengane, Mabena (Lubisi 88′), Letsoalo, Letlabika, Baloyi, Hotto, Motshegwa (Mabaso 74′), Phalane

Taariq Fielies scored the only goal of the game as Cape Town City defeated Free State Stars in an Absa Premiership clash at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday.

Having suffered back-to-back league losses against Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United, the Citizens were hungry for all three points in this clash.

As for Ea Lla Koto, the defeat brings to an end a strong run of form which had seen them claim 10 points from the last 12 up for grabs.

City put in a dominant showing in the first half, but they found Stars to be resilient and determined opponents. Marshalled by the experience of Paulus Masehe, the Free State side hassled and harried the hosts to a standstill in the first half.

The Cape side also suffered an injury blow near the interval when former West Ham United striker Victor Obinna picked up a knock and had to be replaced by Judas Moseamedi on the 40 minute mark.

Benni McCarthy’s side continued to boss the game through the second half but they struggled to create chances with which to test Stars goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare.

However, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 89th minute when City put together an attack which ended with Taariq Fielies putting the ball beyond the reach of Stars’ gloves-man.

The teams will return to league action after the international break in November, with City hosting Baroka on November 22, while Stars will be at home to Chippa United on the same day.

Cape Town City (0) 1 (Fielies 89’)

Free State Stars 0

City: Stephens, Mkhize, Gumede, Martins, Seedat, Matsi, Fielies, Putsche (Masina 75’), Modise (Johannes 90’), Lakay, Obinna (Moseamedi 40’)

Stars: Sangare, Mashego, Keita (Mbhele 65’), Mahamutsa, Phungwayo, Jantjie, Vilakazi, Masehe, Maphakisa (Potsane 57’), Manqele, Mthembu

Platinum Stars will go in search of their first Absa Premiership win this season when they host Ajax Cape Town at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on 1 November 2017, kick-off at 19h30.

Stars have yet to claim a three-pointer in 2017/18, but they have at least put together a run of results which has seen them claim three draws from their last four league matches. Their last outing in the Absa Premiership was a 1-1 draw away to in-form Free State Stars on October 21.

Dikwena have struggled at home in particular, though, suffering three losses from four matches in Rustenburg. Their last game as hosts was a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in early October.

Ajax, meanwhile, broke a two-game losing streak by defeating Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1 at home on October 21. It was just the second win for the Cape side so far this season and they will hope it sparks a run of form which lifts them away from the lower reaches of the log table.

The Urban Warriors, however, have struggled away from home: just one point taken from a possible 12. Coach Stanley Menzo will know his team must improve on the road if they are to meet their season ambitions.

In head-to-head stats, Stars and Ajax have met in 28 league matches since 2003/04. The Urban Warriors have claimed 13 wins compared to eight for Dikwena, while seven matches have been drawn. The Cape side has claimed six wins from 14 home league matches against Stars, suffering five defeats in the process.

Last season Ajax completed a league ‘double’ over the Rustenburg side, winning 3-2 in the North West province and 2-0 in the return game in the Western Cape. These teams have played to just one draw in their last 16 league meetings.

Stars’ line-up from their 1-1 draw with Free State Stars on October 21: Visser, De Jongh, Zulu, Sithole, Mwedihanga, Mere, Mkhabela, Ng’ambi, Otladisa (Kunene 49′), Msomi (Mwila 69′), Ntuli (Matlakala 88′).

Ajax’s line-up from their 2-1 win over Celtic on October 21: Petersen, Evans, Nhlapo, Booysen, Lebusa , Pietersen, Mdabuka, Mzwakali (Kabwe 90+1′) , Mosadi, Morris (Isaacs 85′), Nxumalo (George 72′).

Platinum Stars overcame Maritzburg United 3-1 on penalties following a goalless draw in the Telkom Knockout Cup Last 16 match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

The victory sees Dikwena booking their place in the quarter-finals, while the Team of Choice are eliminated from the tournament.

Stars shot-stopper Dino Visser was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first-half as he kept Maritzburg attackers at bay.

The 28-year-old made a decent save to deny Maritzburg striker Evans Rusike in the 24th minute as Maritzburg pressed for the opening goal.

The home side should have broken the deadlock just before the half-time break after the Stars defence was exposed.

However, Rusike, who represented Zimbabwe at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Gabon, missed the target.

Stars then stood firm at the back in the remaining minutes of the first-half and the score was 0-0 at the interval.

Visser was called into action a few minutes after the restart as Maritzburg continued to search for the opening goal.

The former Polokwane City shot-stopper pulled off a good save to deny Maritzburg striker Lebohang Maboe.

As the match progressed, Stars pressed Maritzburg and the visitors had a chance to break the deadlock in the 71st minute.

However, Zambian international Brian Mwila missed the target after controlling the ball very well in the Mariztburg half.

This proved to be the last chance of the match in regulation time and the game went into extra-time.

The only chance of the first-half of extra-time went to Stars full-back Siyabonga Zulu, who missed the target from a free-kick.

Rusike also missed the target from a promising positiion in the second-half of extra-time and a penalty shootout followed following a goalless draw.

Visser was the hero for Stars, who won 3-1 on penalties after the shot-stopper denied Liam Youlley and Mohau Mokate from the spot-kick.

Free State Stars will chase a third successive Absa Premiership win when they host Ajax Cape Town at Goble Park on 18 October 2017, kick-off at 19h30.

Stars claimed a second victory on the bounce when they beat Maritzburg United 1-0 away on September 29, with Sinethemba Jantjie’s second-half goal earning them three points.

Ea Lla Koto have yet to win at home this season, having held Bidvest Wits to a 2-2 draw and lost 1-2 against Mamelodi Sundowns in their two turns as hosts so far in 2017/18.

Ajax come into the match having suffered their third defeat of the season: Stanley Menzo’s side were beaten 2-0 at home by local rivals Cape Town City on September 30. The Cape side has managed just one league victory so far this season.

The Free State side boasts an unbeaten record at home in this rivalry, with 10 wins and four draws from 14 turns as hosts.

Last season the teams shared the spoils in both league matches: the game in the Free State ended in a 1-1 draw, while the return game in the ‘Mother City’ ended 2-2. Prior to those two stalemates, the teams had played to just one draw in their previous 12 league meetings.

Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Platinum Stars 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The result sees the Brazilians climb to fifth spot on the league table, while struggling Dikwena remain 16th on the standings.

Dikwena conceded just two minutes into the match after their defence was exposed and Khama Billiat capitalized from close range.

The Zimbabwe international fired past Stars goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela after controlling Hlompho Kekana’s long ball very well, before scoring.

The home side was struggling to contain the Brazilians, who looked threatening each time they pushed forward in search of another goal.

Sibusiso Vilakazi, who was part of Sundowns’ front three attackers, had a chance to shoot from close range in the 22nd minute, but he fired over the crossbar.

Dikwena, who had Bonginkosi Ntuli as their target-man, pushed for the equalizing goal, but they found it difficult to penetrate the Sundowns defence.

Sundowns should have doubled their lead just before the half-time break, but Mzimela pulled off a great save to deny Billiat from close range.

The first-half ended 1-0 in favour of Sundowns, who had taken an early lead in the North West Province town, Rustenburg.

The Brazilians continued to create chances in the second-half as they searched for their second goal of the match.

Tebogo Langerman, the Sundowns full-back, found some space outside the Stars box in the 54th minute and he unleashed a shot which was easily saved by Mzimela.

Botswana international Thabang Sesinyi, who was tightly marked by the Sundowns defence, was replaced by Stars’ Namibian striker Benson Shilongo in the 67th minute.

Percy Tau thought he had doubled his Sundowns’ lead ten minutes later after beating Mzimela with a low shot, but the South African international was ruled offside.

Stars could not snatch a late equalizing goal in the closing stages of the match and ultimately, Sundowns ran out 1-0 winners.

Platinum Stars will look for their first Absa Premiership win of the season when they host Mamelodi Sundowns at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on 1 October 2017, kick-off at 15h00.

Stars racked up a sixth successive match without a victory after they held AmaZulu 1-1 in Durban on September 23. The Rustenburg side claimed a first-half lead through Thabang Sesinyi, but they conceded an equaliser to miss out on their first full haul of points.

Dikwena have recorded one draw and two losses at home thus far in the 2017/18 campaign. Most worrying for coach Roger de Sa, they have yet to even score a single goal. That statistic will need to change if they are to have a chance of a positive result against ‘Downs.

Sundowns have not been in league action since September 11 when they defeated Free State Stars 2-1 away from home in their third match of the campaign. That the Tshwane side has fallen behind in the schedule is due to their participation in the CAF Champions League.

Coach Pitso Mosimane will hope his Brazilians keep up their 100 percent away record in the league, having already beaten SuperSport United and Ea Lla Koto in their own back yards thus far in the 2017/18 season.

In head-to-head stats, Stars and Sundowns have met in 28 league matches since 2003/04. The Brazilians have claimed 11 wins compared to six for Dikwena, while 11 matches have finished in draws. The Rustenburg side has claimed just two wins and suffered seven defeats in their 14 turns as host in this rivalry.

Last season ‘Downs took four points off Stars, winning 2-1 in Rustenburg in the first half of the campaign before playing out a 2-2 draw in the return game in Tshwane. The teams have played to five draws in their last nine matches, while Dikwena’s last win over the Brazilians was in the first half of the 2012/13 campaign.

Stars’ line-up from their 1-1 draw with AmaZulu on September 23: Mzimela, De Jongh, Mwedihanga, Mlilo, Zulu, Mkhabela, Mere, Sesinyi, Ng’ambi (Kunene 87’), Mbatha (Mpeta 73’), Ntuli (Matlakala 90+2’).

Sundowns’ line-up from their 2-1 win over Stars on 11 September: Brimah, Ngcongca, Madisha, Arendse, Hachi, Soumahoro, Manyisa (Mohomi 82’), Lebese, Vilakazi, Laffor (Tau 29’), Castro (Sekotlong 67’).

Free State Stars secured a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United in an Absa Premiership match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

As a result, Ea Lla Koto climb up to ninth spot on the league table, while the Team of Choice remain sixth on the log.

There were no clear cut chances for either team in the first 15 minutes of the encounter in the city of Pietermaritzburg.

The hosts did threaten through Evans Rusike just before the half-hour mark after gaining control of the match.

However, the Zimbabwe international’s effort was well saved by Stars goalkeeper Badra Sangare.

Maritzburg, who are coached by Fadlu Davids, pushed for the opening goal with the half-time break fast approaching.

But Stars stood firm at the back and the score was 0-0 at half-time between the two sides.

With his side struggling to break the deadlock in the second-half, Davids made a change in the 58th minute.

Andrea Fileccia, a former Stars striker, was replaced by Devon Saal, as the the Team of Choice looked to break the deadlock.

However, the visitors were slightly better than the hosts and they managed to break the deadlock with 17 minutes left.

Sinethemba Jantjie fired past Maritzburg keeper Richard Ofori to make it 1-0 to Stars with a decent finish.

The goalscorer was then pulled out and he was replaced by defender-cum-midfielder Katlego Mashego as Stars looked to contain Maritzburg.

The hosts pushed for a last equalizing goal, but Stars held on to their slender lead in the remaining minutes and they won 1-0.

Robert Ng’ambi is scared of Sundowns after Champions League exit – ABSA Premiership 2017/18 – Platinum Stars

by
Phumzile Ngcatshe

Friday Sep 29, 2017. 13:30

With Mamelodi Sundowns having failed to defend their CAF Champions League title, Platinum Stars midfielder Robert Ng’ambi has warned his teammates of the Brazilians.

The Tshwane side will resume their Absa Premiership schedule to visit Dikwena on Sunday and the Malawian is scared of Sundowns.

He said they have a duty to win their games and forget about what is happening at the club beyond the field of play.

FRANCK KESSIE: GOAL CELEBRATION IN ON HONOUR OF MY LATE FATHER

“They will come into the game with the mindset of making a statement against us after losing out in the CAF,” Ng’ambi said to the Sowetan.

“It will just be up to us players to focus and make sure we are at our best against what is for me the best team on the continent.

“As players we have not been concentrating on what is happening in the background with the club. Our duty is to win games and remain competitive in the league.”

With coach Roger De Sa’s men still chasing their first 2017/18 win in the league and Sundowns out to erase their CAF disappointments, the match is set to be a thriller in Rustenburg.

Coach Pitso Mosimane’s troops will face Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday, kick-off is at 15:00 (CAT).
