Liverpool back on top as late own goal secures win

As it happened: Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur

Liverpool’s hopes of ending a 29-12 months hold out to win the title seemed set to be dealt a huge blow as Lucas Moura’s strike 20 minutes from time cancelled out Roberto Firmino’s early opener.

However, Hugo Lloris could only palm Mohamed Salat’s header into the route of the unfortunate Alderweireld to condemn Tottenham to a fourth defeat in five Premier League games.

Spurs are now in serious danger of crashing out of the top 4 as they stay level on points with Manchester United and could be usurped by north London rivals Arsenal into third must the Gunners beat Newcastle on Monday.

And the visitors will be still left to regret a massive skipped chance by Moussa Sissoko 5 minutes from time when Liverpool had been wobbling.

The hosts got off to the best start when Firmino headed home the opener on 16 minutes from a pleasant Andy Robertson cross.

That was Robertson’s 12th assist of the season from still left-again and the Scotland skipper was concerned again in a flowing move moments afterwards as he forged down the remaining and neat touches from Salah, and Georginio Wijnaldum teed up Sadio Mane to curl just wide.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino was serving the last of a two-game sideline ban and without the need of the guiding hand of the Argentine, they lacked inspiration in the closing third.

However, Liverpool were generally causing their possess issues by gifting away possession inside their very own 50 % and Dele Alli pounced on a slack move by his England teammate Jordan Henderson to ability a volley that dipped just over the bar with Spurs’ most effective effort of the 1st-50 percent.

Virgil van Dijk experienced a great chance to double the hosts’ lead at the commence of the next period, but the Dutch defender headed above soon after a effectively-worked quick corner in between Trent Alexander-Arnold and James Milner.

On the other hand, Liverpool have been thankful once again to Robertson at the other conclude as he made a very important block to protect against Christian Eriksen firing home the rebound just after Alisson Becker was compelled into his first save of the afternoon by Harry Kane.

When these two sides achieved at Anfield final season, Salah scored lots of goal of the season candidates amidst an extraordinary 44-goal campaign.

The Egyptian even now has a respectable 20 this season, but only a person of those has appear in the previous 11 games and he passed up a great opportunity to give Liverpool some terribly needing respiration place when his shot was blocked by Alderweireld with Mane superior put and begging for a pass.

That missed possibility seemed pricey as Tottenham struck again.

Kane’s quick wondering and exceptional long-array go picked out Kieran Trippier, who fed Eriksen and his scuffed shot fell beautifully for Moura to turn home.

As Liverpool surged ahead in look for of a winner, Spurs could have picked them off as Sissoko blazed more than with just Alisson to conquer ahead of Alli clipped a shot inches wide.

In its place, there was delirium in front of the Kop finish as Lloris need to have handled Salah’s header, but rather parried the ball into Alderweireld and the ball ricocheted around the line to breathe refreshing lifetime into Liverpool’s title problem.

Questioning their mental energy and revealing he finds it “extremely tricky” to motivate his players, Sarri risked alienating a squad that had already rebelled against his predecessor Antonio Conte past season.

The Italian’s blast was fully comprehensible following so quite a few tepid efforts from Chelsea this time period.

But Sarri will have to shoulder some of the blame himself following making a pair of tactical conclusions that have contributed to Chelsea’s malaise.

Deploying Eden Hazard as a central attacker has neutered the Belgian playmaker, who has been far much more efficient in his organic role.

That was born out of Sarri’s annoyance at the misfiring sort of his other forwards Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud.

The previous Napoli boss hopes to indication his old attacker Gonzalo Higuain later this week, but that isn’t his only challenge.

Due to the fact bringing Jorginho with him from Napoli, Sarri has felt compelled to use the midfielder in the keeping role previously occupied so correctly by N’Golo Kante.

Now Kante is a fish out of water on the appropriate aspect of a three-man midfield, leaving him tasked with attacking responsibilities that are not his role.

Producing matters worse, Jorginho is turning into a focus on for disappointed Chelsea fans following failing to dwell up to his name as the man who helps make his manager’s ‘Sarri-ball’ vision arrive to life.

“It was a good option (against Arsenal). We squandered it and now we have to operate even harder to keep in a Champions League position and win games. It has to motivate us.

“We made silly errors. We provoked them to acquire self confidence and arrive to push us due to the fact we have been making errors.”

Chelsea have misplaced their past three games against Tottenham courting back again to past season, with two of those defeats coming below Sarri.

The Blues observed their unbeaten get started to the Leading League season arrive to thudding halt when Mauricio Pochettino’s aspect romped to a 3-1 win at Wembley in November.

The League Cup initial leg was a a lot tighter affair that remaining Sarri bemoaning the use of VAR following Harry Kane was controversially judged to be onside in the make-up to the place kick conclusion that settled the game in Tottenham’s favour.

Due to the fact then, Chelsea have laboured to an unconvincing 2-1 win about Newcastle prior to taking pictures themselves in the foot in the listless flop at Arsenal.

They may possibly be facing Tottenham at the appropriate time having said that as their London rivals are hampered by injuries to Kane and Dele Alli.

Kane will be sidelined till March with an ankle challenge, although Alli endured a hamstring personal injury in Sunday’s 2-1 win at Fulham.

But Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier, just back again from surgical treatment to take out his appendix, insists his aspect is not going to be feeling sorry for themselves when they arrive at Stamford Bridge.

“We struggled to play. It was in possession, we made mistakes which allowed them to play. To win the game we should do better and play better. It wasn’t great.
“We tried to be more aggressive in our offensive phase and to link better Kane and [Dele] Alli behind. This allowed us to be more aggressive in transition and use our full-backs going forward. We had a massive chance with Harry Kane at the end to win the game.
“We still have the possibility to fight [for the top four]. Southampton is in a relegation battle so it is not easy, they fight to survive. Every ball, they were aggressive. But it was our mistake to not win the game.” The Argentine concluded.

“That is another rumour. Look there is a lot of rumours in the media,” he said. “I think you know how the business is today. I think Tottenham is a club that in three and a half years I’ve seen a minimum of 100 names and in the end, we sign a few.”

On the transfer window, he added: “I’m not concerned, I’m not worried. We’re working. We’re awake to the market. If something is available on terms we can take, of course, we’ll do it. But if not, it’s difficult.”

“I am confident always. [If the club doesn’t sign anyone] it is up to us to deliver and try to win. Personally, I never look next to me at what another team is doing,” he said.

“It’s about how I believe, how we believe, and make things happen. We must compete in the best way, try to help the team and players to be better every day and compete with the tools that we have.”

“For me, it’s not about money. Of course, it’s a business and there’s many people, too many people involved in this business,” he continued.

“The people that look after every single player try to get the best for their clients, of course, but the players play because they love football. No doubt about that, today is more professional than 30-40 years ago.

“Every single player is like a company, of course, they look after the players and try to get as many benefits as possible – that’s it.”

I am happy in North London but Spurs need to start winning trophies – Kane

England International, Harry Kane has stated that he is very happy in North London at the moment with Tottenham although he did mention that the earlier the club starts to win trophies, the better.

Kane, who had an astounding year in 2017 has always been reported to be on Real Madrid’s wanted list and his Manager, Mauricio Pochettino having seen how Coutinho’s transfer saga finally played out has earlier stated that Spurs might not be able to stop the 24-year old striker should Madrid come knocking.

However, the former Southampton Manager has admonished his red-hot striker to learn from Francesco Totti’s career loyalty to Roma and Kane has also responded that he has no plan to leave Spurs although he and his teammates have to start winning trophies to match his ambition.

While speaking with The Daily Telegraph after their 3:0 FA Cup third round win over AFC Wimbledon, Kane said: “We’ve been close in the league the last couple of years, but the aim of the game is to win trophies and that’s what we’ve got to try and do,”

“We’re still in the Champions League and the FA Cup and we know Champions League will be tough so the FA Cup is one we have a good chance in. We’ll be one of the favourites.

“We want to win a trophy somehow and the FA Cup is a competition we’re looking at to do that. It’s always been a fantastic competition and obviously there’s been a lot of talk over the years about people resting players but that’s just the nature of the game now – there are so many games and squads are so good, you can rest players, so for us whatever the gaffer chooses we’ll be ready to play.

“I think this year especially with the league, kind of being out of contention – of course, we want to finish in the top four, but there’s a chance for us to win a competition so we’ll see.

“Obviously once the Champions League starts there’s going to be a lot of games, but I think we’ve got a good enough squad to rotate like we did at the weekend, not everyone but a few here and there and get the job done.”

Former England Manager believes Spurs style suits Harry Kane perfectly

Former England Manager, Steve McClaren has said that record-breaking striker, Harry Kane is playing exceptionally well because the team style suits him perfectly. He continued that he expects him to keep his incredible goalscoring form in 2018 so far he remains in Tottenham.

Kane had a phenomenal 2017 as he surpassed superstars, Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo to end the year as the top scorer in Europe with 56goals. That will be the first time in 8 years that neither Messi nor Ronaldo will not claim that feat. He also went on to set a new premier league record after smashing Alan Shearer 22-year record of the highest goals in a calendar year with 39 goals.

If the England International can keep this scoring record it is certain that he will stroll into any team in the world. However, McClaren believes that he is only playing this well because of the structure of the Spurs team.

While speaking with Sky Sports, the former Nottingham Forest boss said: “What he is doing at the present moment is more than impressive, it is phenomenal. I think he is playing in a perfect team at Spurs. You’ve got to stop the supply to him. Spurs press teams, play around the opponent’s penalty box and I think Kane is ideal for that.

“He’s a poacher, a box player. He scores goals in the six-yard box and he’s got a great supply with crosses from Trippier and Rose the other side and Alli’s runs take a lot of defenders on from him, with his runs diagonally, and Eriksen also provides him with a lot of assists. I think he’s in the right team.”

Alderweireld Could Be Out Until February

Alderweireld suffers another Injury setback

Tottenham Manager, Mauricio Pochettino said defender, Toby Alderweireld has suffered a setback in his return from injury and is likely to be out until February.

The Belgian defender sustained the injury in Tottenham’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid on November 1st and it’s almost certain he will be out for another eight weeks.

His recent setback implies that he will be unavailable for Spurs’ premier league games with Manchester City and Manchester United but could be back in time to feature against Liverpool and Arsenal in February before the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 clash with Juventus on February 13th.

“We just have to accept; we cannot change reality. The reality now is that he is injured and will be unavailable until February”. Pochettino said

“The Manager always wants all the players fit like Victor Wanyama, or Danny Rose, and Erik Lamela before. You miss these players who are not fit but football is a collective sport about the team, not individual”.

Wanyama is still unavailable for the game against Brighton tonight alongside Alderweireld and suspended Davinson Sanchez, as the Kenyan midfielder has only returned to light training after a long lay-off due to a knee injury.

Dele Alli’s struggles down to Victor Wanyama’s absence

Former Fulham, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy has put Spurs recent woes down the absence of Victor Wanyama.

The North London club have failed to register a win in their last three English Premier League encounters, with defeat away to Arsenal and Leicester City serving as a massive blow to their title ambitions.

Kenya international midfielder, Wanyama, hasn’t featured for the club since a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea back in August with a knee injury keeping him out of action for longer than initially expected.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: RIYAD MAHREZ – WILL HE BE PERFECT FOR TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR?

The 26-year-old is an integral member of the Spurs squad and Murphy believes that Dele Alli’s failure to keep up his rip-roaring form is down to the missing midfield link of Wanyama and Mousa Dembele.

“I would look at a couple of aspects; one is the stadium change,” Murphy told BBC Radio Five Live.

“There is no denying that has had an effect, and we all know that. I think the other thing is that the foundation of that side – Dembele and Wanyama sitting in from of the back three or back four, depending on how the played – they’ve hardly had them two together, and we wonder why Dele Alli isn’t quite playing the same.

“Anyone playing ahead of Dembele and Wanyama is going to be able to get more of the ball and use his energy to that way – it isn’t the same when those two don’t play, and I think that’s been a big problem,” he concluded.

Spurs gaffer Pochettino worried by Wanyama situation

Austin Ditlhobolo

Sunday Oct 22, 2017. 11:00

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has stated that he is worried about the fitness of Victor Wanyama.

The Kenyan international will have to see a specialist over a knee injury that has kept him out since the defeat to Chelsea in an English Premier League (EPL) match two months ago.

Pochettino gave no indication of when Wanyama will return for the side when speaking to the club’s official website.

“We are concerned about Wanyama’s situation,” the Argentine tactician said.

“We must wait for when he sees the specialist and then we’ll see what happens.

“But of course after some time without him involved in the training sessions and with the team, we are concerned,” he added.

“But now we need to wait next week to have a more clear idea of what’s going on.”

Wanyama, who joined Spurs from Southampton FC last year, has featured in two EPL matches the current 2017/18 campaign.

Last season, the 26-year-old central midfielder played 36 EPL games.

The presence of former Toulouse teammate Moussa Sissoko has helped Serge Aurier settle in at Tottenham Hotspur, according to the Ivory Coast star.

The former Paris Saint-Germain right-back joined the London side in a big-money move at the end of the transfer window last month.

Aurier told SFR Sport: “My integration is good. I know some people including Moussa, with whom I played in Toulouse.

“It allows me to integrate myself as well as possible.

“I am very happy. It is a team with a very good mentality and guys who are super nice. I did not hurt to integrate.

“In the field, I immediately got my bearings. I am very happy to be in this locker room.”

The Elephants player made his Premier League debut this past weekend in Spurs’ 0-0 draw at home to Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs seal £23m deal for PSG defender Serge Aurier

Tottenham have completed the signing of Ivorian defender Serge Aurier from Paris St Germain.

Press Association Sport understands Spurs will pay around £23million for Aurier, who has agreed on a five-year contract at White Hart Lane.

The 24-year-old is Tottenham‘s fourth arrival of the summer, following Juan Foyth, Davinson Sanchez and Paulo Gazzaniga in joining Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

A Tottenham statement read: “We are delighted to announce the signing of Serge Aurier from Paris St Germain.

“The right-back has signed a contract with the club until 2022 and will wear the number 24 shirt.”

Aurier has represented Ivory Coast 40 times and is viewed as a direct replacement for Kyle Walker, who was sold to Manchester City for a fee rising to £55million earlier this summer.

He will compete for a starting spot on the right side of defence with Kieran Trippier and the promising Kyle Walker-Peters.

Tottenham’s latest signing is not without controversy, however, after Aurier was given a suspended sentence for assaulting a police officer last year.

The conviction made obtaining a work permit this week more complicated and prevented Aurier from entering the United Kingdom in November, when PSG played Arsenal in the Champions League.

Aurier was also suspended by PSG after directing homophobic language towards his manager Laurent Blanc during an online question and answer session in March last year. He recognised the need for a “fresh start” in the Premier League.

“This is a huge and exciting opportunity at a massive football club and I am determined to prove myself as a professional both on and off the pitch,” Aurier said.

“This is a fresh start for me and I will do everything to make the Spurs fanbase, which is huge and diverse, proud of me.

“The fans are the most important people at any club and I am looking forward to showing them and everyone at Spurs the real Serge Aurier.”

The official LGBT Association of Tottenham Hotspur said in a statement: “We were initially unhappy with the signing, but given our positive dialogue with the club we would like to use this as an opportunity to build bridges and make lasting change.”

Aurier started out at French club Lens before moving to Toulouse in January 2012, where his performances earned him a place in the 2013-14 Ligue 1 Team of the Year and a summer move to PSG.

Making the switch permanent in 2015, Aurier won two league titles at the Parc des Princes, as well as three French Cups and four French League Cups.

He was selected in the 2015 African Cup of Nations Team of the Tournament when Ivory Coast was crowned champions.

PSG and Spurs have agreed to a €25million deal but the transfer has yet to be completed due to visa issues.

The Elephants man has been banned from entering the UK because of suspended sentence for assaulting a police officer in 2016.

However, Le Parisien reports that Aurier has now received a UK visa and is clear to enter the country.

It is expected that the right-back will arrive in London today to complete the transfer, having already passed a medical assessment in Paris.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Ivory Coast defender Serge Aurier is reportedly set for a switch to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Elephants right-back underwent a medical assessment in Paris on Friday and is set to complete a move to London for a fee of £23-million – subject to the acquisition of a work permit.

Aurier, 24, was handed a two-month suspended sentence for assaulting a police officer in Paris in 2016 and is currently banned from entering the UK.

However, it is believed his appeal against the sentence will be successful and allow the player to obtain the necessary paperwork.

Sky Sports reports that Spurs have pipped Manchester United in the race for the West African star, who is surplus to requirements at PSG following their capture of Dani Alves.

Aurier is set to serve as a replacement for Kyle Walker, who was sold by Spurs to Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to meet Lazio’s €30 million valuation of Keita Balde Diao, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The forward, who will be out of contract at the end of the season, has missed several training session’s in an attempt to force a move away from the club with Juventus the wingers preferred choice of destination – and also the only club he is willing to move to in Italy.

Diao, 22, is reportedly determined to join the Old Lady with the winger shrugging off interest from Napoli, AC Milan, Inter Milan and West Ham United.

Ivory Coast international Serge Aurier has reportedly said his goodbyes to his Paris Saint Germain teammates, ahead of a possible move to the English Premier League.

According to French-based journalist, Jonathan Johnson, Aurier has waved what will be his now former teammates ‘Au Revoir’ as he sets his sights on England switch.

Aurier, 24, last week told the French giants that he was eager to continue his career elsewhere, having fallen behind Dani Alves in the pecking order at the club.

Tottenham Hotspur are also reportedly keen on landing want-away Paris Saint Germain defender Serge Aurier before the end of the transfer window.

Spurs are in for another right-back following the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City for a whopping £50 million.

With money in the bank and PSG open to sell following their capture of Dani Alves, Spurs could land the Ivory Coast international for half the price they demanded for Walker.

Interest from Manchester United and Inter Milan, though, could up Aurier’s price with The Sun reporting that the 24-year-old’s wage demands could throw a spanner in the works for Spurs.

Only three of Mauricio Pochettino’s men earn over £100,000-a-week (Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen and Harry Kane) with the club unlikely to offer Aurier the money he demands.
