The Everton FC midfielder has reflected on Senegal’s successful 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

His club has struggled in the English Premier League (EPL) this season which has resulted in the departure of coach Ronald Koeman, who has since been replaced by Sam Allardyce.

Gueye, who remains one of the most important players for Everton, has at least enjoyed the escapism of helping Senegal qualify for the World Cup.

The holding midfielder was 12 when Senegal first reached the tournament in South Korea and Japan in 2002.

In those days Gueye was playing barefoot on sandy roads with rocks for goalposts.

“I was in my village as a boy at that time and when Senegal score everyone is going out and celebrating,” Gueye told Daily Mail.

“I will never forget this moment – it was the first time Senegal was at the World Cup.

“Now it’s the second time we have qualified and hopefully we make the people of Senegal proud.”

Gueye, who is a key player for Senegal, played eight games during their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The 28-year-old helped Everton beat West Ham United 4-0 in an EPL match on Wednesday.

He played the entire match which was played at the iconic Goodison Park.

The influential midfielder played a key role in helping Senegal book their place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals which will be hosted by Russia.

Nicknamed the Lions of Teranga, Senegal defeated South Africa 2-0 in a Group D match at the Peter Makaba Stadium in Polokwane last week Friday and they qualified as group winners.

Gueye played the entire match in the middle of the park – protecting the Senegal defence along side West Ham United defender-cum-midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate.

Aliou Cisse decided to rest some of Senegal’s key players ahead of their final Group D match which was against South Africa at the Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor in Dakar on Tuesday.

However, Gueye and Senegal captain Kouyate kept their place in the starting line-up as the Lions of Teranga secured a 2-1 win over Bafana Bafana in a dead rubber.

Gueye, 28, took to social media to express his joy after Senegal qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 16 years:

The midfield enforcer will now focus on Everton‘s upcoming English Premier League (EPL) match against Crystal Palace which will be played in London on Sunday.

Before the FIFA international break, Gueye helped the Toffees end their four-match winless run in the EPL with a 3-2 win over Watford at home.

A victory for Everton over Palace, will see the Toffees move further away from the relegation zone.

Information coming through from Senegal is that US Ouakam have been suspended by Senegal’s Football Federation (FSF) following a stampede which resulted in the deaths of eight fans.

Media reports indicate that close to 100 other spectators sustained injuries as Ouakam fans clashed with opposing fans at the Stade de Mbour during Saturday’s League Cup final.

In the wake of the developments, the FA has since issued a statement to temporarily suspend Ouakam from football related activities.

“US Ouakam are temporarily suspended,” the FSF said in a statement.

According to a report carried by AFP, multiple witnesses reported seeing Ouakam fans throw stones and other objects at the Mbour supporters.

The move came just after the visiting side grabbed a 2-1 lead in extra-time of the final where a wall at the Demba Diop stadium in the capital Dakar collapsed following the fighting between fans.

“My thoughts with those who lost loved ones or were injured during (the) tragic stampede at Demba Diop Stadium. Heartfelt condolences,” tweeted FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura, who is also Senegalese.

On Sunday, Senegal’s government announced a formal inquiry into the disaster while suspending all sports and cultural events until political elections take place at the end of the month.
