Gernot Rohr on Mikel and Moses’ worldwide futures

Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr has spoken of the intercontinental futures for John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses.

Neither player was named in the Super Eagles’ squad for their impending matches against the Seychelles and Egypt.

The former is a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, even though the latter is a welcoming.

Both games will be played in Asaba.Moses retired from worldwide football, contacting time on his Nigeria vocation after the 2018 World Cup in Russia past year.

There was speculation that he could return to the Super Eagles soon after exhibiting some great form for loan club Fenerbahce, and Rohr is open to the player resuming his worldwide career.

Talking to the official website of Confederation of African Football, Rohr claimed: “I was against his global retirement and, if he altered his thoughts, he need to explain to me but I have no information and facts about it.

We are going to see.”On the situation of his skipper John Obi Mikel, who was omitted from the hottest collection, the German manager added: “He has arrived in Middlesbrough not too long ago. He told me he was not ready and wants to function after his knee damage in China.“He did not play all winter season possibly. He is not dominated out for the AFCON but could not make that match in Asaba. We will see for the potential.”

Gernot Rohr extends his contract with Nigeria until 2020 – 2018 FIFA World Cup – Russia

by
Phumzile Ngcatshe

Wednesday Nov 29, 2017. 09:00

Super Eagles of Nigeria coach, Gernot Rohr has penned a new two-year deal until 2020.

The Nigerian Football Federation has decided to tie down the German manager after masterminding their qualification to the 2018 FIFA World Cup with one game to spare.

Rohr was appointed on an initial two-year contract in August 2016 until 2018, taking over a team in turmoil following Sunday Oliseh’s reign.

Announcing the contract extension, NFF boss Amaju Pinnick said the federation was impressed by Rohr’s work ethic.

“When we saw the draw for the World Cup, we knew we were condemned [by a tough group] and we determined that we must overcome it,” Pinnick quoted by ESPN.

“The first thing we identified was that we needed a new coach so we reached out to Arsene Wenger, to Gerard Houllier, and one name kept coming to the fore: Rohr.

“Now we have no regrets about hiring him and he has proven himself not just by qualifying for the World Cup, but with the foundation he is laying for our team, which now has young players from the age of 19, [he is] doing well.

“That is why, as we launch this fan engagement platform, I am proud and happy to announce that we have extended Rohr’s contract for another two years, and paid him his wages until December 2017.”

Rohr’s new deal means this is the first time that a Super Eagles coach has had his contract renewed before a World Cup as Pinnick launched the NFF’s campaign to take 100 fans to Russia

Nigerian Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr hopes former German youth international Kevin Akpoguma decides to play for his team.

This comes after the manager was in Europe to embark on a scouting mission last weekend where he watched the Bundesliga clash between Hoffenheim and Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Rohr revealed his delight after watching the central defender and says he plans to hold talks with Akpoguma over an invitation ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: MOHAMED SALAH – ‘THE EGYPTIAN STAR COULD SCORE 70 GOALS THIS SEASON

”I watched him play for Hoffenheim against Frankfurt on Saturday. Kevin is an excellent match for the players we are on the lookout for,” Rohr told SWR.

”But he’ll have to decide soon whether he wants to wear the colors of Nigeria and I’ll call him in the next few days.”

The defender added that it’s an honour to see Rohr showing interest in him, but he is German and wants to represent the Die Mannschaft.

“That honours me, of course, but I’m German, I was born here, so I should play for Germany too,” adds the former German U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 international.

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has singled out Brian Idowu and Francis Uzoho for special praise after his side defeated Argentina 4-2 in a friendly in Krasnodar on Tuesday evening.

The Super Eagles found themselves 2-0 down to ‘La Albiceleste’, but a brace from Alex Iwobi and goals from Kelechi Iheanacho and Idowu saw them claim an impressive victory.

Idowu and Uzoho were half-time substitutes, replacing Ola Aina and Daniel Akpeyi respectively to make their debuts for the senior national team.

“Brian is a team newcomer, but he’s not the only one. We have three new players, and I would like to highlight our 19-year-old goalkeeper Uzoho. He played well,” Rohr said at the press conference attended by Sport Express Russia.

“Such matches are specially designed so that we can evaluate new players in the team. We have three players who have a special relationship with Russia. There’s also Ahmed Musa and the captain of the team, he has a connection here through the family.

“Brian played well, scored a goal. His prospects depend on how he will perform at the club. His debut, I’m happy.

“On his position we have other options, so who will play better will be in the team.”

Nigerian national team coach Gernot Rohr has revealed that depth in his Super Eagles squad can help them at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The Super Eagles manager was speaking after their 1-1 draw against the Desert Warriors of Algeria on Friday in Constantine.

Rohr praised the performance of the fringe players he used as they bagged a point in their final Group B clash and will now focus on the friendly against Argentina on Tuesday.

The performance of the players has convinced Rohr about the depth his team possess as they head out to the World Cup in Russia next year.

“Everybody worked well, they lost the ball and the tried to get it back. They did well which means that the building is starting now and some things are changing. We have the same attitude,” said Rohr to Completesportsnigeria.com.

“The game showed us that we have players who can play in different positions. We were searching to find new players and we found good new players but we must wait and the return of some injured players.

“Some of these players have shown that they can come in with the first team. We saw good competition for some players in some positions.”

Nigerian coach Gernot Rohr is monitoring Vincent Enyeama’s progress – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

by

Friday Nov 03, 2017. 13:30

Nigeria national team coach Gernot Rohr will not rush goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama back into the national team set up.

According to the Super Eagles communications boss, Toyin Ibitoye, the coach is aware that Enyeama is back in action for his French club Lille OSC.

Rohr has never hidden his love for the ex-Super Eagles number one and skipper who only recently returned from a six months injury absence.

Ibitoye said the coach is excited with the news, but he is monitoring the keeper’s situation at club level.

BRILLIANT KHUZWAYO HINTS AT KAIZER CHIEFS EXIT

”Rohr is aware that Enyeama is back in training, and not only that he is excited but he won’t be rushed back into the team. Rohr is monitoring his situation at Lille,“ Ibitoye said to ownGoalNigeria.

Enyeama is back in training with Lille, but is yet to play a game this season after coach Marcelo Bielsa axed him alongside 10 others from his first team upon his appointment as coach.

Bielsa brought in two new goalkeepers, but their poor form has made the coach likely to hand a reprieve to Enyeama.

The French Ligue1 outfit is struggling to win games and is languishing at number 19 in the 20-team league.

NFF president: Gernot Rohr will field best XI against Algeria – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

by
Phumzile Ngcatshe

Thursday Nov 02, 2017. 17:00

Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick has emphasised that national team coach Gernot Rohr will pick his best available XI for the match against Algeria.

The Super Eagles will take on the North Africans in Constantine on November 10 for their final Group B 2018 World Cup qualifier, followed by a friendly against Argentina four days later in Russia.

Nigeria have already secured qualification for the 2018 finals, making the match against Algeria little more than academic. However, Pinnick insists the Super Eagles will field their strongest team.

“The temptation is there to rest on oars because we have already qualified,” the NFF president told his organisation’s official website.

“But we would not do that. I am happy the technical crew led by the Technical Adviser has already made it known they would be fielding Nigeria’s best squad on the day.

“The Secretariat must quickly finalise all arrangements. The match in Constantine must be seen as a FIFA World Cup preparation match, just like the one against Argentina in Russia four days later.

“We will go with our best and give our best, to get in the FIFA World Cup mood.”

While Nigeria will field their best available players, the likes of Odion Ighalo, Victor Moses and Elderson Echiejile are unavailable, while Leon Balogun is doubtful.

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr to name 25 players for Algeria and Argentina clashes – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

by

Monday Oct 30, 2017. 16:30

According to Nigerian Football Federation’s spokesperson Toyin Ibitoye, Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr will release a squad of 25 players for the Algeria and Argentina clashes.

The 2013 African champions will face the Desert Warriors in their final 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier and face the Albiceleste in a friendly next month.

Rohr will release a list of 25 players on Monday with two on standby for the games versus Algeria on November 10 and 14 against Argentina respectively.

Ibitoye confirmed to Owngoalnigeria.com that the list will be made up of players who have been in the team.

”Some players are going to be recalled, but that doesn’t mean new names. For now the coach is sticking with the players he has been working with the past few months”, Ibitoye said.

”Some players are presently injured so they won’t be in the list, but overall it will be made up of same players who have been working with the coach the past few months.

”The idea is to put out a formidable team for the game against Algeria and later Argentina.

“A good showing in both games will help our ranking with FIFA, which will play in our advantage during the World Cup draws in December.“

Friday Oct 27, 2017. 14:00

Nigerian senior team coach Gernot Rohr has revealed how he avoided becoming a victim of the Nigerian media.

He says media pressure is intense in the country, revealing he was crucified by the media when he first took over as the Super Eagles coach over a year ago.

Speaking to L’equipe, the Franco-German mentor revealed he initially struggled to keep up with the demands of the Nigerian media.

However, he said he was able to conquer the fear and he now has a healthy relationship with the members of the fourth estate.

”I’m the boss, I have full powers because I won straight away, so my hands became free,” he said.

”But the media pressure is immense in Nigeria. The press are ever present. At first I was careful not to fall into one of the cracks of the media but later I had no such problem.”

Rohr will lead his men to their final Group B match of the qualifiers against Algeria before facing Argentina in Russia in an international friendly next month.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has insisted that national team coach Gernot Rohr will have the final say over whether goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama returns to the Super Eagles.

The veteran goalkeeper has been frozen out of the national team since having a row with former coach Sunday Oliseh, but he is reportedly close to a return after positive talks with Rohr.

Many pundits have argued that the return of Enyeama could unsettle the Super Eagles, with a possible captaincy power struggle between the ‘keeper and current incumbent John Obi Mikel.

The competing point of view is that Enyeama’s experience will be invaluable as Nigeria head into a World Cup year, in which they must also recover from an opening game defeat in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying group.

NFF secretary general Mohammed Sanusi insists that the organisation will not try to influence whether Enyeama is recalled or not, explaining that the decision will be entirely in Rohr’s hands.

“The NFF does not interfere in the choice of players or goalkeepers for the national teams,” Sanusi told the Guardian.

“We had given Rohr the free hand to pick whoever he feels capable of playing in the Super Eagles.

“I won’t say we are in support of his decision to bring back Enyeama, neither will I say we are against it. Rohr’s decision is final as far as such issue is concerned.”

Enyeama could be back in the Nigeria set up as early as next month, with the Super Eagles set to face Algeria away in their final World Cup qualifier.

Rohr: A draw against Zambia will be okay for Nigeria – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr says a win or draw against Zambia will be okay for the Super Eagles on Saturday.

The Super Eagles are set to host Zambia’s Chipolopolo in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualification Group B match.

The match will take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in the Nigerian city of Uyo.

The Super Eagles will qualify for the finals as Group B winners if they beat Chipolopolo this weekend.

Rohr spoke exclusively to All Nigeria Soccer (ANS) shortly after his arrival in Uyo.

ANS: How do you assess your team right now?

Rohr: We will try to prepare well, we will have two training sessions everyday, then we will assess the video of our past match and also the video of our opponent. The Zambians are a different team from the one we played in October last year.

They are a younger team, they are much quicker and better than when we last played them. And you know of course not all the players have arrived.

ANS: What is the target for the match on Saturday?

Rohr: The target always is to win but if we don’t win we draw. We must not lose the game. It is a different Zambian team from the Cameroonian team. It is an even more difficult game.

They have analyzed us just as we have analyzed them, so they know us better, hence it is going to be a tough game.

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr says they have one foot in the door of Russia after their 1-1 draw against Cameroon in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Monday.

The stalemate in Yaounde followed a 4-0 win at home last Friday, and the German manager says he is happy with their progress.

“I am very happy that we are on the verge of qualification to the FIFA World Cup in Russia,” Rohr told reporters.

“There is joy in my heart for coaching this set of players who gave their best for the entire 90 minutes to grab a point. Now we have a foot at the Mundial.

“It was a different Cameroon team. After losing 4-0 to us last Friday, they came out and gave us a good game.

“Our target was to grab four points over the two legs. For us we achieved our objective. It was mission accomplished us.

”We should all be happy now that we are on the verge of qualification although we know that we made mistakes that we will work on fixing in the upcoming period.”

In the wake of the draw, the Super Eagles now need a draw at home against Zambia to reach the 2018 World Cup.

Rohr: Nigeria’s Akpeyi retained because of his experience – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

by
Austin Ditlhobolo

Monday Aug 28, 2017. 18:00

Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr has stated that he is yet to decide who will start in goal against Cameroon after including Daniel Akpeyi in his squad.

The goalkeeper was heavily criticised by the Nigerian media and fans following the Super Eagles’ 2-0 defeat to South Africa in the 2019 CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Uyo last June.

However, German tactician Rohr has decided to retain Akpeyi, who plays for South African side Chippa United, in the Super Eagles squad.

Rohr has stated that the 31-year-old is the most experienced shot-stopper in the current Nigeria set-up ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon.

“We have Akpeyi, we have (Ikechukwu) Ezenwa, we have (Dele) Alampasu, we will see,” Rohr told Own Goal Nigeria.

“We have a local goalkeeper, we have a very young one and we have another one (Akpeyi) who is more experienced.

“He is playing in South Africa, and we will see with our goalkeeper coaches to determine who will start the game.”

The Super Eagles will play host to Cameroon in Uyo on 1 September 2017 and the return leg game is scheduled to be played in Yaounde three days later.

Nigeria’s England-based keeper Carl Ikeme is currently battling cancer, while OSC Lille shot-stopper Vincent Enyeama was not called up by Rohr.

“Some players will be playing in the UEFA Champions League and league matches, so we must be careful and be prepared because we could have problems either at their clubs or even in the first leg game in Uyo,” he added.

“We know that in these two games, we need at least three points and the best is to get it in the first game. To win the games, I think we have a team which is stronger than the last time with more experience because three other key players are back now.

“There is our captain (Mikel Obi), Leon Balogun and Victor Moses coming back. In each department of our team, we have key players returning and we need their experiences and talents.”

Former Nigeria international goalkeeper Andrew Aikhuomogbe reckons there is a need for the Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to recall Vincent Enyeama.

Aikhuomogobe has called for Enyeama’s return into the team as replacement for Carl Ikeme ahead of Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon in September.

Ikeme, who has been Super Eagles number one goalkeeper since taking over from Enyeama has been diagnosed with leukemia last month by Wolves club doctor and remains a doubt for the team.

However, the former goalkeeper of the senior national team said Enyeama remains the only capable net minder to replace Ikeme.

MARITZBURG UNITED DENY THAT BRIAN ONYANGO HAS GONE AWOL

“As for me, I don’t think we have any better goalkeeper that can replace Carl Ikeme than Vincent Enyeama in the Super Eagles,” Aikhuomogbe told Soccernet.com.ng

“Besides, I was really worried when I first heard the news considering the fact that the other goalkeepers such as Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Theophilus Afelokhai, Daniel Akpeyi and Dele Alampasu don’t possess Ikeme’s quality.

“At least I have watched them in goal for the team and they don’t seem to impress me.

“There is nothing wrong if we recall Enyeama considering the fact that he’s experienced and he knows the terrain very well. I believe he will be so important for us against Cameroon if Rohr invites him.”

Rohr sets focus on finding local goalkeeping talent – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

by
Bertin Basson

Wednesday Jul 19, 2017. 17:00

Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr has decided to shift his focus to the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) in his search for a national team goalkeeper, an official of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reportedly revealed..

According to The Guardian, Rohr is in desperate search of a reliable shot-stopper in aftermath of the Super Eagles 2-0 defeat to South Africa in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Daniel Akpeyi started between the posts for Nigeria in the loss, but many feel he isn’t an adequate replacement with the West Africans yet to truly replace Vincent Enyeama.

“We read that Rohr is thinking of inviting South Africa-based former U-23 goalkeeper, Emmanuel Daniel to the team, but all I can say is that the issue is more serious than that,” an unnamed source told The Guardian.

“We must beat Cameroon in Uyo and to do that we need the best players we can get hence the decision to look for the best goalkeepers around to come and prove what they can do.

“Apart from goalkeepers, the manager has been in touch with the players needed for the matches against Cameroon and everybody is agreed that we must treat the game with the seriousness it deserves.”

Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr says his key players will be ready for Cameroon in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification Group B match in August 2017.

The Super Eagles are coming off a disappointing 2-0 defeat to South Africa in their first 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification Group E match.

The highly anticipated encounter took place at the Goodswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo last weekend.

Nigeria have now switched their attention onto the World Cup qualifier against their West African rivals Cameroon, the Indomitable Lions.

“South Africa met an inexperienced and younger Eagles, that is why they won the match,” Rohr told Premium Times.

“We did not play with our main team, many of our experienced players were not in the match mainly due to injury.

“But they will be ready for Cameroon.”

The Super Eagles are sitting at the top of the Group B standings having won their first two matches and they are four points above second-placed Cameroon.

Zambia and Algeria are also part of the group. Only the group winners will book their place in the finals which are scheduled to hosted by Russia next year.

Rohr: “We became nervous and made mistakes” – 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers

Gernot Rohr has explained that his Nigeria side “became nervous and started to make mistakes” in their loss to South Africa this past weekend.

The Super Eagles were beaten 2-0 in Uyo on Saturday evening in their opening Group E match in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The German coach believes that Bafana Bafana’s extra experience played a role in the game, as did his side’s inability to convert the scoring chances they created when the game was still locked at 0-0.

“We failed to convert our opportunities and when they scored, my young team became nervous and started to make mistakes,” Rohr said in his post match comments, as quoted by Allnigeriasoccer.com.

“It is a sad result, but we win together and we lose together, and when a team gets this kind of result, it looks within and rectifies whatever shortcomings in order to achieve better results subsequently.

”This can only make us stronger,” added Nigeria’s coach.

The Super Eagles will return to competitive action in August and September when they face a double header against African champions Cameroon in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
