The Kenyan Premier League Awards have been moved to January 2018 as the Harambee Stars are busy with the 2017 CECAFA Senior Challenge.

Kenya will host the regional showpiece which means an announcement was made that the local awards event will be hosted next year.

Media reports in the country suggest that the red carpet ceremony was planned for December 13.

The regional tournament was initially scheduled to end before the gathering of top league performers.

However, due to unavoidable circumstances, according to the organizers, the tournament will now start December 3 to 17.

“The new date for the awards will be communicated in due course,” a statement from KPL said.

The league’s Chief Executive Officer, Jack Oguda, had earlier confirmed to Soka25east that betting giants SportPesa will sponsor this year’s event.

For over a decade, pay television company SuperSport footed the bill until their broadcast deal with the KPL was terminated this year.

Friday Dec 01, 2017. 10:30

Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool teammate Emre Can has showered praise on the Egyptian wing-wizard who has taken the English Premier League by storm.

The 25-year-old took his goal tally to an astonishing 17 across all competitions (12 in 14 league games) with a brace in a 3-0 win over Stoke City on Wednesday evening.

Salah emerged off the bench to great effect as the Reds claimed victory away to the Potters.

The former Chelsea attacker has hit the ground running at Anfield following his move from AS Roma ahead of the 2016-17 season, and German international midfielder Can is impressed…

“You can see that everyone is a little bit scared of him [Salah] as it is unbelievable how quick he is,” Can told the Liverpool ECHO.

“He has the confidence now. He has a lot of goals and everyone knows he can always score. Against Stoke, it was the same as he came on and showed his confidence.

“He had one chance and the volley was great after an unbelievable assist from Sadio (Mane). It’s good for us and very good for him. I hope it goes on,” he concluded.

Sadio Mane: No bad blood between me and Jurgen Klopp – Premier League 2017/2018

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane

Senegal star Sadio Mane has rejected claims of a feud between himself and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The Teranga Lions star was visibly upset at not receiving a starting role for the Reds in their 1-1 draw with Chelsea this past weekend.

Mane eventually appeared as a substitute and was seen having a heated discussion with Klopp after the match, sparking rumours of bad blood between the pair.

But the 25-year-old has explained that the heated words were down to a misunderstanding and there is “no problem”.

“He [Klopp] asked me to play on the right side and one time I tried to ask for the ball in the number nine position,” Mane told Sky Sports.

“Mo [Salah] was on my side and the coach was shouting ‘Sadio come onto the right side’.

“After the game I told the coach it was easier if you told Mo to come in because he was close to you.

“But it was friendly, it was not because I was unhappy or something else. There was no problem, I was just communicating and explaining that to him after the game.”

Everton coach David Unsworth: Oumar Niasse’s charge sets a dangerous precedent – Premier League 2017/2018

Phumzile Ngcatshe

Friday Nov 24, 2017. 11:00

Everton interim manager David Unsworth believes the charge on striker Oumar Niasse could set a dangerous precedent.

This comes after the Senegalese forward was found guilty of diving and banned for two games following a punishment under the new English Football Association laws that were introduced in May.

Niasse becomes the first Premier League player to be charged after he won a penalty, under pressure from Scott Dann, in a league draw at Crystal Palace last weekend.

“I think these people [the FA] will be very busy,” said Unsworth to the BBC.

“It’s a dangerous precedent that could be set if decisions are given against you which are debatable.

“I think anywhere on the field it’s a foul. He [Niasse] was shocked and I was shocked [by the charge].”

The Lions of Teranga attacker denied he had committed an act of simulation that led to the penalty being awarded in the fifth minute of the game.

However, the EFA’s Independent Regulatory Commission has found him guilty.

With Rollers open to listening to offers, the Botswana Premier League outfit could part ways with Ntege and Tshepo Matete who is linked with a move to AmaZulu.

Speaking to the Sunday Standard newspaper in Botswana, Rollers spokesperson Bafana Pheto says they are yet to receive offers regarding their duo.

“We are open to offers regarding any of our players and encourage our players to work hard to gain recognition in big leagues,” Pheto told Sunday Standard.

“We will not stand in any way of players if offers come forth but at the moment we have not heard anything formal but aware of such rumours,”

Although Pheto declined to divulge the duo’s worth in the transfer market, he insists they would hold discussions at management level to decide on the value of players.

Ivorian legend Emmanuel Eboue has urged his countryman Yaya Toure to quit Manchester City.

Toure has found himself relegated to a bit-part role this season at City, who are managed by Pep Guardiola.

Eboue, who played for Arsenal between 2004 and 2011, spoke to the Manchester Evening News about Toure’s situation.

“I’m not sure that he is going to stay because he wants to play,” the 34-year-old said.

“If he still there he’s not going to play so I think for him it is better to leave – to go to play.

“He’s a good player so every week when you stay on the bench and you don’t play, it’s hard in your head,” he added.

“It’s time for him to leave. When you see City this year, the players they have are good – good midfielders, good strikers.

“So for me it is time to for him to leave,” Eboue, who has 79 Ivory Coast caps, concluded.

Toure, 34, has made only two appearances in the English Premier League (EPL) for City this season.

Austin Ditlhobolo

Thursday Nov 16, 2017. 10:00

The influential midfielder played a key role in helping Senegal book their place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals which will be hosted by Russia.

Nicknamed the Lions of Teranga, Senegal defeated South Africa 2-0 in a Group D match at the Peter Makaba Stadium in Polokwane last week Friday and they qualified as group winners.

Gueye played the entire match in the middle of the park – protecting the Senegal defence along side West Ham United defender-cum-midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate.

Aliou Cisse decided to rest some of Senegal’s key players ahead of their final Group D match which was against South Africa at the Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor in Dakar on Tuesday.

However, Gueye and Senegal captain Kouyate kept their place in the starting line-up as the Lions of Teranga secured a 2-1 win over Bafana Bafana in a dead rubber.

Gueye, 28, took to social media to express his joy after Senegal qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 16 years:

The midfield enforcer will now focus on Everton‘s upcoming English Premier League (EPL) match against Crystal Palace which will be played in London on Sunday.

Before the FIFA international break, Gueye helped the Toffees end their four-match winless run in the EPL with a 3-2 win over Watford at home.

A victory for Everton over Palace, will see the Toffees move further away from the relegation zone.

The African midfielder joined English Premier League (EPL) side Southampton FC on a five-year deal from Italian Serie A giants Juventus prior to the 2017/18 campaign.

Some expected Lemina to take some time before adapting to life in the EPL – having turned out for FC Lorient and Olympique Marseille in the French Ligue 1.

However, the midfield maestro took to the EPL like a duck to water – producing good displays for Southampton and he was deservedly named the club’s October Player of the Month.

The former French youth international, who made his debut for Gabon in 2015, told Southampton’s official website that the style of the league suits him.

“It’s really nice to have the fans talking and singing about me,” Lemina said.

“I feel very comfortable in the Premier League, the style of our play and the style of the league suits me and brings the best out of me.

“I am happy to be here and to have made a good start.”

The 24-year-old has made seven EPL appearances for Southampton – having missed the team’s last two league matches due to an injury.

He is expected to resume training after the current FIFA international break.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Mohamed Salah – One of the best English Premier League signings – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool

Austin Ditlhobolo

Monday Nov 13, 2017. 19:00

The 25-year-old forward has been hailed as one of the best signings in the English Premier League (EPL) by Liverpool FC icon Robbie Fowler.

Liverpool signed Salah from Italian giants AS Roma on a long-term contract for an initial €42m fee that could rise to up to €50m.

The fee was a club record, eclipsing the £35m spent on English striker Andy Carroll in 2011. Salah has since hit the ground running at Liverpool.

The Egyptian international has impressively netted 12 goals in 17 games across all competitions since joining the EPL giants.

Legendary English striker Fowler, who is Liverpool’s all-time top scorer with 346 goals, praised Salah’s qualities and goalscoring form.

“I think certainly at the start of the year there was plenty of goals in them, a few missed chances,” Fowler told ESPN.

“All the pressure was put on the defenders then because they were conceding goals,”

“But now they’re scoring goals and everything is taken away from the defense, I think we are quite happy the way we’re going, three good wins,” the 42-year-old continued.

“Certainly the signing of Mo Salah has probably been one of the signings of the Premier League so far.

“With the pace he has got he will have chances all day and he needs to keep up the good form because he is important for Liverpool,” he concluded.

Tiemoue Bakayoko has revealed that Didier Drogba helped convince him to move from Monaco to Chelsea.

Drogba, a legend for both Chelsea and Ivory Coast, played a major role in Bakayoko choosing the Blues over other suitors.

“It was clear in my mind that if I had to leave Monaco it was Chelsea. I was a fan of Chelsea, Drogba is a friend. He gave me advice about the club,” Bakayoko told Canal Plus.

The 23-year-old French midfielder, who is of Ivorian descent, also revealed that Antonio Conte’s desire to sign him helped further sway his decision.

“When you’re little you dream of being like them. When (Antonio) Conte calls you and tells you he wants you in his team and he needs you, you realize that you are really a good player.

“When a coach like that calls you and tells you that, it’s a pleasure.”

After choosing to represent England over Nigeria on an international level, Tammy Abraham has rubbished rumours that he considered playing for Nigeria.

The forward says he does not regret choosing the Europeans instead of the West African nation despite repeated overtures from the Nigerian Football Federation to lure him.

Abraham’s father is Nigerian which would have qualified him to play for the Super Eagles.

A childhood friend of NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, claimed in September that Abraham had decided to play for the Super Eagles.

However, the U21 England international denied the claim and has been called up for England’s forthcoming friendlies against Germany and Brazil.

“I see myself as being a long-term England player,” Abraham said.

“That is where my main focus is and I am 100 percent focused here to try and get into that team.

“I was pretty set on England really and playing in the Premier League meant it would be nice to play in the England team as well.”

Altgough he is on loan at Swansea City from Chelsea, he has scored five goals in his first 14 appearances for the Welsh club.

“It was flattering (when asked about Nigeria’s interest), but for me my main focus was here (England). It was nice to know that I was doing something right and going in the right direction.”

Nigeria lose Tammy Abraham to England – Premier League 2017/2018

Tammy Abraham is set to make his debut for England this month, despite previous claims by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Amaju Pinnick that the forward will play for the Super Eagles at international level.

The lanky forward, who was born in England, qualifies to play for Nigeria at international level through his parents and there were hopes that he would choose to represent the West African nation at next year’s World Cup in Russia.

The chances of that happening, though, seem to be over with Abraham now in line to make his debut for the Three Lions against either Brazil or Germany.

Abraham, 19, has scored five goals in 13 games for Swansea City across all competitions this season. He is currently on loan at the club from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

News coming out of England is that Kenya and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Victor Wanyama has resumed training after being sidelined due to injury.

The Harambee Stars captain’s injury was a cause for concern after sustaining a recurring knee injury. It was feared it could keep him out of competitive action for the rest of the season.

The north London side has, however, remained coy on how long the 26-year-old will be out of action, a move that has opened up speculation in media circles.

Meanwhile, the Lily Whites boss manager Mauricio Pochettino had also shared his concerns over the prospect of the player’s prolonged absence.

“We are concerned about his situation. We must wait for when he sees a specialist and then we’ll see what happens. But of course after sometime without him involved in the training sessions and with the team, we are concerned,” the Argentine manager said on October 20.

Elmina Sharks owner, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, has vowed to sue Wilfred Osei Palmer in court for accusing him of bribing players in the Premier League, insisting that the Ghana FA Executive Committee member has ‘bitten off more than he can chew’.

Palmer, who is also the President of Tema Youth, fired a broadside at the Presidential Candidate of the the Progressive People’s Party, insisting he has no moral authority to make claims about match fixing.

Palmer accused Ndoum of involvement in match fixing in the wake of the latter’s claims that some clubs in Ghana influence referees in the Premier League.

Club officials have been trading accusations of match fixing with Aduana Stars CEO Albert Commey, accusing Nduom of attempting to bribe referee Uriah Glah ahead of their Premier League match in the penultimate cash between the two sides in Dormaa.

Nduom accused Aduana Stars of influencing the referee, leading to their defeat and Palmer hit back by accusing the PPP candidate of also influencing Tema Youth players when the two sides clashed in the latter part of the season.

The politician says he will take legal action against Palmer to prove that he is innocent of all the accusations leveled against him.

“I am asking my lawyers to take him to court to prove this allegation. And while they are doing this, they will rope in all the others who have come to the media with similar accusations,” Ndoum wrote on his Facebook page.

“I have been through 2nd Division, 1st Division and now Premier. Some think that I am new to this. They are wrong. They have bitten more than they can chew.

“Time for discipline in the GPL!”

Ghana FA’s Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into claims of match fixing and bribery in the league.

Chelsea will have to pay world-record fee to land Kalidou Koulibaly – Premier League 2017/2018

Kalidou Koulibaly, Napoli

Graeme Jackson

Monday Oct 23, 2017. 16:30

Chelsea coach Antonio Conte has been informed that he will need to pay a world-record transfer fee for a defender if he is to prise Senegal’s Kalidou Koulibaly away from Napoli.

The Teranga Lions defender has long been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis admitting that he has had to fight hard to keep the 26-year-old at Stadio San Paolo.

Yet the Blues remain keen on signing Koulibaly, with Conte convinced that the West African will strengthen his side’s defence and lay the foundation for future success.

However, Calciomercato reports that Napoli have put a £70million price tag on the player. If that fee is met, it would make Koulibaly the most expensive defender in football history.

The record fee for a defender was broken twice by Manchester City in this past European summer, with the Citizens paying £50-million and £52-million for Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy respectively.

Senegal head coach ,Aliou Cisse, is more than confident that Liverpool star Sadio Mane will be fit for the country’s back-to-back 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa next month.

According to reports, Mane has been included in the Lions of Teranga’s squad for the double-header against Bafana Bafana, despite the Liverpool attacker currently nursing a hamstring injury.

“In my mind there’s no doubt he will be with us for the double header against South Africa and that he will be 100% fit,”Cisse is quoted as saying.

“Until now, he has just been doing some individual training – running in straight lines – but from next week, he is going to train harder and start working with the ball.”

It is unclear when the 25-year-old is set to return to action with the Reds initialing predicting that he will spend up to six weeks on the sidelines.

The former Southampton winger picked up said injury in Senegal’s 2-0 win over Cape Verde in Praia earlier this month, as the West African’s moved top of Group D.

Senegal have announce their squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa and they have included the injured Liverpool forward Sadio Mane.

Mane has been included despite his existing hamstring strain after he was douubtful for the home and away games against Bafana Bafana on November 10 and 14 respectively.

Liverpool said the forward could be out for up to six weeks on October 10 after he damaged his hamstring in their 2-0 win over Cape Verde in Praia.

The Nigerian trio of Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi and Ahmed Musa will welcome a new boss at the helm of Leicester City, following the sacking of Craig Shakespeare on Tuesday.

The news followed the club’s 1-1 draw to West Brom at the King Power Stadium, with the Foxes lingering in the relegation zone following a slow start to the campaign.

Both Ndidi and Iheanacho started the draw against the Baggies, with the latter having struggled since his big money switch from Manchester City.

The 21-year-old’s struggles have resulted in constant trolling by especially West Ham United fans, who stated their apparent delight in the Hammers passing on signing the forward.

It will be interesting to see how Shakespeare’s successor uses Iheanacho with Islam Slimani emerging from the bench with great effect against West Brom on Monday. The burly Algerian teeing up Riyad Mahrez for the equalizer.

Media reports in Uganda reveal that Kampala Capital City Authority will have to part ways with more than Ugx 100 million if they want to sign Muhammad Shaban.

The reigning league champions have already spent Ugx 50 million on the striker for signing-on fees, but are yet to reach an agreement with Onduparaka where he remains contracted.

Shaban was unveiled by the Lugogo-based side three weeks ago based on a ruling from the FUFA Players’ status committee that gave leeway for him to join a club of his choice subject to agreement with Onduparaka, which KCCA hasn’t done yet.

Kawowo reports that KCCA made an offer of Ugx 20 million which the Caterpillars rejected and it’s now understood they want not less than Ugx 50 million for their former captain.

“KCCA disrespected us and we are ready to follow the matter to its logical conclusion,” club CEO Anthony Affeti is quoted in the Daily Monitor.

“The player might have got his Shs50m sign-on fee but we can’t allow him to move at Shs20m (which KCCA reportedly offered).

“If we can’t get over Shs50m from our best player who even featured at AFCON, then when will we get that chance?.”

Faouzi Ghoulam to sign new contract despite Premier League interest? – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Faouzi Ghoulam could still sign a new contract with Italian side Napoli, despite reported interest from Premier League giants such as Manchester City and Liverpool.

The Algerian has thus far refused to sign new deal in Naples, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the 2017/18 season.

The 26-year-old is one of Europe’s most highly-regarded left-backs and has become a top performer since his move to Italy from Saint-Etienne in 2014.

Ghoulam’s status at Napoli has drawn interest from Manchester City and Liverpool, while the likes of Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus have also been linked with the North African.

However, Goal reports that Napoli are “increasingly confident” that Ghoulam will sign a new five-year contract with the club.

The deal will include a €40m release clause, which can only be triggered by foreign clubs. This will dissuade Napoli’s Serie A rivals, such as Juventus and Roma, from signing the player.

Ghanaian Joseph Anang may soon be eligible to represent West Ham United in official matches, with the club attempting to secure a work permit for the goalkeeper.

The 19-year-old, who has played for Danbort FC and Wa All Stars in his young career, was signed by the Hammers during the European summer.

He impressed coach Slaven Bilic and his technical team during a trial and was offered a three-year contract.

Anang has been training with the West Ham first team but he is not available for selection in competitive games as he has yet to be granted a work permit.

West Ham have applied to the Home Office to gain the necessary paper work and are confident their bid will be successful.

Anang is currently third in line for the number one jersey behind Joe Hart and Adrian.

West Ham also have Africans Cheikhou Kouyate, Diafra Sakho and Andre Ayew in their first-team squad.

Monday Sep 18, 2017. 10:00

Nigeria coach Salisu Yusuf says he will make a few changes to the starting line-up that will face Ghana in a must-win match.

The two West African giants will square off in the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations Group 1 match in Cape Coast on Monday.

The home-based Super Eagles drew their first two Group 1 games and they need to defeat Ghana in order to advance to the semi-finals.

“It is a must-win game; we are certainly aware of that,” Yusuf said.

“Definitely, we will look at making a few changes because this is one match we must show character and efficiency at the rear, and middle and the fore.

Yusuf stressed the importance of the match which be played at the Cape Coast Stadium.

“Not only must we avoid defeat; we must win to make progress in the championship,” the tactician continued.

“That demands absolute seriousness and diligence and only the best legs will do.”

Nigeria coach Yusuf praises Sierra Leone – Nigeria Premier League 2017

Friday Sep 15, 2017. 14:00

Nigeria coach Salisu Yusuf has praised Sierra Leone after their clash at the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations in Ghana.

The home-based Super Eagles brush aside Sierra Leone 2-0 in a Last 16 match at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Monday, September 11.

However, Nigeria were frustrated by Mali in the opening Group A match of the West African tournament at the same venue and the match ended in a 0-0 draw on Thursday, September 14.

“Sierra Leone are a good team. The quality of their players is good,” Salisu said.

“In football, you can play well without scoring goals – no matter how many chances you create and sometimes the match ends up in a draw. So, it’s normal in football. It happens.

Prolific marksman Anthony Okpotu and attacking midfielder Samuel Mathias, who both started against Sierra Leone, were left out of the starting line-up against Mali by Yusuf.

“It was not a strategy. Okpotu started in our first game against Sierra Leone. I just decided to use him from bench against Mali,” the tactician explained.

“As for Mathias, we have other good players in his position. It’s a quality team and everyone can play.”

The Super Eagles will now take on Guinea in their second Group A match at the Cape Coast Stadium on Saturday. Kick-off is at 15h00 GMT (Ghana).
