Guardiola talks up relationship with Mahrez, Puel ahead of weekend clash

Manchester City Manager, Pep Guardiola has spoken about his relationship with the player he tried to sign on the transfer deadline day, Riyad Mahrez ahead of his side’s clash with Leicester.
The former PFA player of the season has refused to show up in training for the past nine days since Leicester Management denied his potential move to Etihad.
He was depressed after failing to secure a move away from the Foxes again despite turning in his transfer request. Leicester Manager, Claude Puel however, claim that the Algerian might not feature in the game against the League leaders despite returning to training.
Guardiola believes that the player should have done better in handling the situation even as he affirms that they were really keen on signing him in January.
He said: “Hopefully he will play, I want him to come back soon and play, we enjoy watching him and hopefully he’ll come back as soon as possible with Leicester and play at his level.”
He went ahead to speak of his relationship with the Leicester Manager
“I met him when I was at Barcelona and he was at Lyon,” he said.
“He’s an experienced manager, he did really well at Southampton, Leicester still has the fundamentals from a long time ago that helped them to be champions but he has introduced something else.
“They play more between each other, have more passes. It is always a strong team. Just two seasons ago they were the champions and apart from two or three players they are the same.
“They are still dangerous with [Jamie] Vardy, with [Marc] Albrighton, with Mahrez, with Okazaki. We know Kelechi is so dangerous in the box.”
“We will do everything to stop them although I know it will be tough” The former Barcelona Manager concluded.

Mahrez to be unavailable at Swansea, set to be fined £200,000

Former PFA player of the season, Riyad Mahrez is set to be unavailable in Leicester’s clash with Swansea this weekend as club Manager, Claude Puel is hopeful that he will make himself available again to the team after his proposed moved to League leaders, Manchester City was truncated on deadline day.

He is thus set to be fined to the tune of £200,000 [about two weeks wages] by the club after he was absent from the team’s training for a second day.

The 26-year old has not been seen in Leicester’s training facility since his potential move to City was denied as a result of Leicester’s excessive demands. He was reportedly absent on Thursday and then today.

The Citizens, who were keen on bringing the Algerian International to the Etihad to replace the injured Leroy Sane were frustrated with his club’s demands which made them walk away from the deal leaving the player to an uncertain future.

“It is time to talk to Riyad, we have a good relationship and we need to manage the situation,” said Puel.

“Riyad is not available for this game. All I can say about the situation is that this is the best decision for Leicester, in the best interests of Leicester. It is also the best decision for Riyad.

“It is a tough situation for us to manage but now it is time to move on and keep our focus.”

It was reported that the player requested a transfer so as to force himself out and was afterwards left out of the team that suffered a defeat at Goodison Park

As a result of the failed move, various reports stated that the forward was in a depressed state and we are only left to imagine what can emanate out of this conundrum.

Ex-England international midfielder Danny Murphy believes Algerian international winger Riyad Mahrez must join Tottenham Hotspur.

Murphy has told Match of the Day, which was broadcast on November 30, that the Lily Whites need to sign a player like Mahrez.

The Leicester City attacker featured on the wing for the Foxes during their 2-1 triumph over Mauricio Pochettino’s men on Tuesday.

Mahrez cut inside and took aim, before curling the ball beyond goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to score his side’s second goal of the match.

“He’d suit Tottenham. They need someone like him,” Murphy said.

“They need someone who can add a bit of dynamism to their team.”

Pochettino’s side have now failed to beat West Bromwich Albion and Leicester in their last two fixtures, and have slipped down to seventh place in the English Premier League table.

On the other hand, Mahrez will want to help the Foxes claim the three points when they meet Burnley at home on Saturday.

Leicester City manager Claude Puel has played down Riyad Mahrez’s angry reaction to being substituted in Friday night’s 1-1 draw at West Ham United.

The Algerian star was replaced in the 70th minute by Ben Chilwell and his unhappiness at the substitution was clear for all to see.

However, the Foxes’ French coach has shrugged off the incident, insisting most players are unhappy to be replaced during a game.

“When a player leaves the game they are disappointed – it’s not too important,” Puel said in the wake of the Premier League clash.

“It was hard to find Mahrez in the second half.

“We tried to play on the counter attacking with Demari Gray and Vardy against this team as they were playing with long kicks and winning the second balls.

“But it was not possible to find them in the second half.”

Manchester City are reportedly battling it out against Arsenal for the signature of Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez.

The Algerian has been a subject of speculation in recent times, with more clubs linked with the left-footed winger.

Media reports in Spain suggest that City manager, Pep Guardiola is reportedly an admirer of the tricky midfielder and is hopeful of adding more attacking talent to his squad.

Meanwhile, Mahrez has also been linked with moves to the Gunners and Chelsea, but insists he is ‘settled’ at King Power Stadium, despite an attempt to leave in the last transfer window.

To add fuel to the speculation, Guardiola was spotted chatting with the Desert Foxes international at the end of the Blues’ 2-0 victory over Leicester last weekend.

“Everyone knows that I had desires to leave, except that it did not happen. I do not want to think of the transfer window at the moment. We still have 12 games to play until January, so if I thought of the transfer window now, I will not play football anymore,” Mahrez recently told the Daily Star.

With his future remaining unclear, will Mahrez be tempted to join the title changing City and possibly add to his EPL gold medal?

Leicester City’s Algerian star Riyad Mahrez says he is not thinking about the January transfer window just yet, insisting he is focused on his performances.

The Fennec Foxes star was strongly linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium in the European summer transfer season, but the window snapped shut in early September with Mahrez unable to secure a new club.

The Algerian has since knuckled down and put in some strong showings for Leicester, especially since the appointment of new coach Claude Puel, and he emphasised that his focus is very much on the field right now.

“Everyone knows that I had desires to leave, except that it did not happen. I do not want to think of the transfer window at the moment. We still have 12 games to play until January, so if I thought of the transfer window now, I will not play football anymore,” Mahrez told the Daily Star.

He added, “I have been in Leicester for four years. I like this club and I am happy to defend its colours.

“I won the Premier League and took part in the Champions League. Before that, I played with the club in Championship.

“So I have to focus on my role in the field without worrying about what is being said here and there. We will see later what the future will hold for us.”

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Riyad Mahrez – Will he join Tottenham Hotspur in January?

by

Thursday Nov 16, 2017. 19:00

Latest media reports in the United Kingdom reveal that Algeria and Leicester City winger, Riyad Mahrez is still eyeing a move away from the Foxes.

The Desert warriors international has been linked with a transfer from the King Power Stadium for some time and he is now linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

A report carried by the Daily Star suggests that the Lily Whites are set to benefit from bringing the Algerian in.

Mahrez has been in good form at Leicester this term, with the winger contributing five assists and scoring two goals in 11 English Premier League appearances.

Morever, the arrival of new coach Claude Puel seems to have fuelled something in as far as Mahrez’s performance is concerned.

The England-based website adds that manager Mauricio Pochettino is convinced that the 26-year-old could add value in his attacking options.

City, though, will be reluctant to lose one of their most-prized assets, but the emergence of Demarai Gray means that the blow may now not be quite as hard to take as it once would have been.

Although Spurs reportedly wanted to sign Mahrez in the English summer, they were unable to get a deal and could be tempted to test the water in January.

Although Algeria are out of the race to book a spot at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the Desert Warriors will still have to protect their dignity when they meet Nigeria.

The thrilling encounter is set to be staged in Constantine on Friday as the North Africans will hope to boost their morale after a poor campaign.

Having a new coach in Rabah Madjer, the Algerians are aware that a win will ease their dismal qualifying campaign.

Madjer will lead the side for the first time after the axing of Lucas Alcaraz last month, and he wants a win to start his tenure on a high.

However, he will not make it happen alone and that is why players such as Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani must be in an uncompromising mood to down the Super Eagles.

“Our team is in crisis, it has been a difficult period for the players and that is why we have to get back to winning matches immediately (defeating Nigeria),” stressed Madjer.

Madjer will bank on the Leicester City winger as he has been impressive in the English Premier League in recent times.

With Leicester City having registered two straight wins in all competitions, Algerian star Riyad Mahrez has played a crucial role.

He scored as they beat Leeds United 3-1 in the League Cup and also provided an assist as they downed Swansea City 2-1 in the English premier League last weekend.

The left-footed winger is continuing to raise his hand and help the Foxes when the chips are down at King Power Stadium.

However, a big question creeps in just after the club announced changes in the technical team where a new coach has come in.

Frenchman, Claude Puel has been confirmed as Craig Shakespeare’s successor after penning a deal at the King Power stadium until June 2020.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: VINCENT ABOUBAKAR- CAMEROON STRIKER OUT TO KEEP UP SCORING FORM

Is this good news for Mahrez? The Desert Foxes international has established himself under managers Claudio Ranieri and Shakespeare.

Despite reports that he wants to move away from the 2015/16 EPL champions, the 26-year-old has always given 100% whenever he donned the Blue shirt.

Puel is a man who will definitely come with new strategies and will have his favourite players, but will that put Mahrez into an awkward spot?

Some managers could be tempted to do away with a player who has his sights set somewhere else as that could jeopardise the club and the manager’s job.

Mahrez is undoubtedly one of the best foreign players in the EPL and his stance on making a move to greener pastures could hurt him.

However, it all depends on how Puel will deal with the player and matters in the dressing room as he may follow the notion that a new broom sweeps clean.

Algerian star Riyad Mahrez has dedicated Leicester City’s weekend win over Swansea City to sacked manager Craig Shakespeare.

The Foxes’ boss was shown the door last week, seeing Michael Appleton take over on a caretaker basis.

But Leicester bounced back strongly from the news, with Mahrez setting up both goals in their victory at Liberty Stadium.

Asked if the win was for Shakespeare, Mahrez said: “Of course. He was our manager and everyone loved him at the club.

“It was a surprise for us. But we have to try to honour the club because the most important thing is the club. We played good today and we deserved to win.

“It was a difficult week for us as everyone knows.

“It was good that we won today, it was an important game for us and for the club. I think we put everything on the side and we played our game and we got the three points.”

Algeria will be without Riyad Mahrez, Nabil Bentaleb and Islam Slimani when they lock horns with Cameroon in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier this weekend.

This is after Algeria suffered home and away defeats against Zambia in their last qualifiers which ended their hopes of reaching next year’s finals. As a result, the Algerian Football Federation stated that they would try out new players for the last two qualifiers.

The match between Algeria and the reigning African champions Cameroon, who also saw their hopes of qualifying ending last month, will be played at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé on Saturday.

Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions and the Desert Foxes are placed third and fourth respectively on the Group B standings. Group leaders Nigeria will qualify if they beat Zambia in Uyo on Saturday.

The trio of Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Nabil Bentaleb have not been fully ruled out of Algeria’s national team set-up, according to the country’s Football Federation (FAF) president Kheireddine Zetchi.

Le Buteur reported earlier in the week that the three players are set to be left out of Algeria’s next squad for the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon next month.

This is after Zetchi and the FAF have called on coach Lucas Alcaraz to rebuild the national team. Algeria notably fell out of contention for Russia 2018 by losing back-to-back matches against Zambia in the last international window.

“Mahrez, Slimani and Bentaleb are players who have contributed a great deal to [the Algerian team] and I am convinced that they can still bring it to the future,” Zetchi told Le Buteur.

“It is true that we spoke of a revolution after the defeat against Zambia suffered at Constantine, but this revolution spreads over several phases.

“It does not have to be done only by changes of players. It must be operated on all levels.

“Organisational, rules of procedure, the attitude that the players must have. It is a whole. What is certain, is that these players are not definitely ruled out.”

The FAF president added that the coach will make the final decision in regards to selection, and that the time is right to widen their pool of available players.

“I cannot understand this controversy regarding the non-selection of some players.

“I wish to make it clear that the non-summoning of these players does not in any way constitute a dismissal.

“It is the current context of selection that has led us to make these decisions. Given that we are already eliminated from the World Cup race, we believe it is time to rebuild a new team.

“We want to see other players. Also, I would like to emphasise that these decisions were taken by Alcaraz. The expanded list, he introduced it.”

Want-away Algerian Riyad Mahrez has had to put up with some teasing from his Leicester City teammates, according to manager Craig Shakespeare.

The winger left the Fennec Foxes’ camp ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Zambia and headed to Paris to try and secure a move away from the King Power Stadium.

His efforts came to nothing, with the transfer window closing before he could sign with any potential suitors.

Shakespeare has admitted that Mahrez’s antics have left him at the mercy of some teasing in the Leicester dressing room.

“I had an idea of where he was but if you are asking me to pinpoint it I wouldn’t be able but I would have suggested he was at an airport somewhere,” said Shakespeare.

“I did try to call him but it was an international dialling tone and I wasn’t quite sure where he was.

“He had permission from the Algerian FA. When they go on international duty they (Algerian FA) have the duty of care.

“In a way I could understand what him and his advisors were doing.

“There has been some banter. He has taken a bit of a ribbing but he will brush it off.”

Riyad Mahrez must continue to work hard for Leicester City if he wants a transfer in the January window, according to teammate Jamie Vardy.

The Algerian winger has made no secret of his desire to leave the King Power Stadium.

Last week he left Algeria’s training camp ahead of their World Cup qualifying matches against Zambia to head back to Europe and attempt to secure a last-minute move.

However, none of the player’s supposed suitors pulled the trigger on a deal, and he remains a City player.

Vardy, who has also been linked with a Leicester exit, says Mahrez must be prepared to put in the hard yards between now and the next window if he fancies a move.

“As for Riyad, I heard he went to Europe on a holiday. It’s up to him now,” said Vardy.

“People were saying he wanted a winter move instead. If that’s the case he will be wanting to perform and knuckle down to put himself out there.”

Mahrez and Vardy will hope to feature for the Foxes when they host Chelsea in a high-profile Premier League clash on Saturday.

According to the Daily Star, Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez tried to engineer a move to Manchester United on transfer deadline day last week.

Mahrez, who has made no secret of his desire to leave Leicester City, was excused from Algeria’s World Cup qualifying camp and flew back to Europe to try and organise a last-day transfer before the window closed last Thursday.

The Fennec Foxes winger was linked with the likes of Roma (who had several bids rejected by Leicester), Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea, though a move never materialised.

The Daily Star now claims that the representatives of the player had tried to induce a move to United on the deadline day, but the Red Devils never made an official offer – despite reported interest from manager Jose Mourinho.

Mahrez missed Algeria’s 3-1 defeat away to Zambia on Saturday and it remains to be seen whether he will be available for tomorrow night’s return match in Constantine.

Algeria have given Riyad Mahrez permission to leave the national team training camp and fly back to Europe to complete a transfer away from Leicester City.

The Fennec Foxes winger has expressed a desire to leave the King Power Stadium, and with the transfer window set to close tonight he has been given the blessing of the national team to complete a move to an unnamed club.

Algeria are busy preparing for back-to-back 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Zambia.

A statement on the Algerian Football Federation website read: “Leicester City’s Algerian international Riyad Mahrez, who is currently with the national team in Sidi Moussa to prepare for the double confrontation against Zambia for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, was authorised by the national coach Lucas Alcaraz and the Algerian Football Federation to make an express trip to Europe to formalise on Thursday his transfer to his new club.

“The national team will fly without him on Thursday morning to Lusaka to face Zambia on Saturday.”

The identity of Mahrez’s suitors is unknown, though he has been linked with Roma, Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester United during the European summer.

Danny Simpson has explained that Leicester City’s players will not get involved in any potential transfers for Algerian Riyad Mahrez and striker Jamie Vardy.

The duo have been strongly linked with transfers away from the King Power Stadium, with Mahrez drawing particular interest from Serie A giants Roma.

Simpson says the other players don’t get involved in transfer business, leaving it up to the individuals and clubs in question to work out the issues themselves.

“When you’ve got good players in your team they’re going to get linked to teams in every window,” Simpson told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show.

“It’s probably more frustrating for the fans and the manager. For the lads it is what it is and we want people to stay at Leicester.

“But at the same time you can’t really get involved if a so called big team wants to take them [Mahrez and Vardy].

“I want them to stay because they’re great players. But at the same time you don’t really get involved because it’s their decision and the club’s decision.”

Leicester City will not relent in their determination to retain Riyad Mahrez and other key players, according to manager Craig Shakespeare.

The Foxes have rebuffed multiple offers from Italian giants Roma for the Algerian attacking midfielder, even though he has put in a transfer request.

Danny Drinkwater has also been linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium, but Leicester are refusing to budge.

“We don’t want to be a selling club, we want to add to it,” said Shakespeare ahead of his side’s Premier league season opener against Arsenal on Friday night.

“We don’t want to sell our best players. The speculation is always going to be out there at this time of year.

“You know when you have good players there might be an interest in them. You have to deal with reality but also keep a calmness about you as well.”

Monchi, the sporting director of Roma, says his club remains hopeful of signing Leicester City’s Algerian star Riyad Mahrez, despite failing with three bids.

Sky Italia claims that Roma have recently had a third offer of £31.8m – a club record for the Serie A giants – rejected by the Foxes, following previous bids of £20m and £27m.

“I’m optimistic in life, by nature. Rome is doing everything possible to take the player,” Monchi said at the unveiling of another new signing, Gregoire Defrel.

“I am happy with the effort the club is making to take him. It is close to the limit. I do not think the club has often bid over €30m.

“If my memory does not deceive me, the latest offer would be the club’s most expensive purchase in our history.

“We are, therefore, engaged and expect an answer. But it is true that we are working on other solutions.”

Roma are hoping to wrap up a deal for Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez in the very near future, with director of football Ramon Rodriguez, better known as Monchi, set to haggle over money.

Rai Sport reports that Monchi is set to meet with his Foxes counterpart Eduardo Macia today and try to come to an agreement over a transfer fee.

Roma have bid €35m for the 26-year-old North African, but Leicester are demanding €44m.

The English side feel comfortable in demanding a high fee, knowing that compatriots Arsenal are also keen on signing Mahrez.

However, Roma have a back-up plan, with Monchi reportedly set to turn his attention to Juventus’ Juan Cuadrado if he cannot land Mahrez.

Either Mahrez or Cuadrado will serve as a replacement for Egyptian Mohamed Salah, whom Roma sold to Liverpool earlier in the transfer window.

Leicester City head coach Craig Shakespeare has revealed that winger Riyad Mahrez wants to play for a top-six club.

Mahrez, 26, has been heavily linked with a move away from the Foxes with the Algeria international expressing his desire to leave the club amid strong reported interest from Arsenal, Roma and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Foxes, though, are resilient in their quest of keeping the wing-wizard at King Power Stadium and will only let him go if a suitable bid is made. Reports suggest the club have rejected a £32 million approach from Roma, but Mahrez is reportedly keen on remaining in England.

“He wants to play for a top-six club,’ Shakespeare is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail. “If we don’t get an offer from a top-six club, he stays. If that offer comes in and it’s not enough, he stays.

“It is quite clear for me at the moment, he has made that statement but he is our player.

“I picked him for 60 minutes [vs Burton Albion], he performed. Is it doing my head in? It’s part and parcel of the transfer window. If you let it, it can affect you. But my job is to make sure the players are focused on every training session and every game,” he concluded.

Leicester City captain and defender Wes Morgan says Algeria international Riyad Mahrez is still committed to the club.

Mahrez, who has handed in his transfer request at Leicester, is reportedly not giving his best performance for the English Premier League (EPL) club.

This is after the winger’s current employers rejected a bid from Italian giants AS Roma, who are keen to acquire Mahrez’s services during the current Transfer Window.

”Everyone knows about Riyad Mahrez. We`ve seen what a difference he can make,” Morgan told Leicester Mercury.

“He’s got the key to unlocking defences. I think you can see on the pitch that he’s not slacking.

“He’s putting in a shift for the boys. He’s a Leicester player and that`s all I can say,” he continued.

“Whatever happens with a potential transfer, long may that continue to be the case when it comes to his attitude as after everything he’s achieved with us.

“I don’t think there’s anyone that would like this to sour those memories and his displays.”

Mahrez, who is eager to leave the 2015/16 EPL champions, has also been linked with English giants Arsenal.

Leicester City’s Algerian star Riyad Mahrez is a transfer target for Serie A giants Roma, according to Sky in Italy.

Mahrez has been on Leicester’s books since signing from Le Havre in 2014 and helped them claim an unlikely Premier League triumph in 2015/16, earning the PFA Player of the Year prize in the process.

The Fennec Foxes player also helped Leicester reach the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League last season.

However, in May he handed in a transfer request in an effort to force through a move away from the King Power Stadium, with the likes of Barcelona and Arsenal reportedly interested in signing the player.

Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare told Sky Sports last week that the club had yet to receive any offers for Mahrez, but this new interest from Roma may open up a new chapter in the saga.

The Italian club could view the Algerian as a replacement for Mohamed Salah, whom they sold to Liverpool last month.

Leicester City have not received any offers for want-away Algerian attacker Riyad Mahrez, according to manager Craig Shakespeare.

The Fennec Foxes player has made clear his desire to leave the King Power Stadium in the current transfer window, having released a statement to this effect back in May.

This action disappointed Shakespeare, under whom Mahrez enjoyed a renaissance in his form in the second half of last season, but he has shrugged it off and insisted that the club has yet to receive any bids for the 26-year-old.

“I’m not worried,” the Leicester boss told Sky Sports News. “Can it be disappointing when a player comes out publically? Yes.

“I think we have to look what is behind that as well, in terms of advice.

“We have to understand Riyad’s concerns but while he is contracted to the football club, and while we’ve had no bids for him, which we haven’t, he has to be professional and we have to be professional.

“He has to be fully committed here and I expect him to do that.”

Mahrez has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, but the London side have been focused on other transfer targets thus far.
