Football Scores Top Tips: Man City out to be Lyon tamers

IT’S a big night in the Champions League with Man City and Man United among those in action.

Leicester face Southampton in the EFL Cup and there is six Championship matches as well as full cards in League One and League Two so plenty to look at.

It’s a week for the RFO and I’ve be studying stats and form before putting up tips.

My Champions League tips are reasoned on the post and I’m going with Man City, Juventus and Roma not to lose as a treble.

The Super Single is Norwich who have been fantastic in recent weeks. They hammered Swansea 4-1 away at the weekend to make it 12 goals in three games – they also hit four against Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday. Can make it four wins in a row at a Hull side who went down tamely at home to Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

UEFA Europa League – Atalanta-Lyon – Atalanta v Lyon background

Atalanta and Lyon both sealed qualification from UEFA Europa League Group E with big victories on matchday five. The outcome of their meeting in Reggio Emilia will decide the top two positions in the section.

The winner of this match will clinch the group, but if it ends in a draw then the scoreline will be decisive – with 0-0 or 1-1 favouring Atalanta but 2-2 or any higher-scoring draw giving Lyon the edge.

Previous meetings
• The matchday two encounter in France, which was the first time the teams had met as well as Atalanta’s maiden encounter with French opposition, finished 1-1. Bertrand Traoré put Lyon ahead on the stroke of half-time before Atalanta equalised through captain Alejandro Gómez on 57 minutes.

• Lyon’s record in 23 games against Italian sides is now W8 D6 L9 (W4 D2 L5 in Italy). They have not won on any of their last four visits across the border (D1 L3).

Form guide
• Atalanta achieved their biggest away win in Europe on matchday five when they overcame Everton 5-1 at Goodison Park; they are now five matches unbeaten in Europe this season (W3 D2).

• Atalanta are seven home games unbeaten in Europe, their last such defeat coming in the 1987/88 European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final against Mechelen (1-2).

• Lyon have scored in each of their last eight European away matches, and their last 13 home and away. However, they have won just one of their last five fixtures outside France (D1 L3).

• Fourth in Serie A last term, Atalanta are back in Europe for the first time since 1990/91, when they were eliminated by Internazionale Milano in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.

• Lyon were UEFA Europa League semi-finalists last season, when they lost to Ajax having transferred from the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Algeria Football Federation (FAF) boss Kheireddine Zetchi will reportedly try to convince Olympique Lyon youngster Houssem Aouar to play for the Fennec Foxes at international level.

Aouar, 19, has caught the eye for Lyon this season, with the attacking midfielder earning rave reviews for his technical skill and vision.

Aouar was born and raised in Lyon, France, and has represented the European country at U-17 level.

However, he is of Algerian descent and Le Buteur reports that he is likely to welcome an approach from the FAF.

Changing his international allegiance will also be a relatively easy process, as he has not represented France’s junior teams in any competitive fixtures.

The teenager has even earned praise from former Lyon star Karim Benzema: “This player, I like him. He is technical, he has a good vision. If he works, he can go far,” said the Real Madrid star.

OL goalkeeper Anthony Lopes also sees great things in Aouar’s future: “I’m not at all surprised by his performances,” he told RMC.

“He’s been working with the pro group for two years now. He has fully seized his chance and shows his qualities on the field.

“He has the talent, he is very intelligent, he is laid and I think he will make a very good career.”

Burkina Faso international Bertrand Traore wants to make more impact at his new club Olympique Lyonnais.

The 22-year-old joined the French Ligue 1 giants from English Premier League side Chelsea on a permanent deal prior to the current campaign.

On Saturday, Traore played the entire match as Lyon drew 3-3 with Dijon at the Groupama Stadium in a league clash and he did not score.

“Yes, it has been difficult,” Traore was quoted on Foot Mercato.

“So, I’m starting to get back to the shape of the beginning of the season.

Traore, who spent last season on loan at Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam from Chelsea, has scored one goal in seven league matches for Lyon thus far.

“But I want to do more, to be more decisive. I know I have to bring more to the team. With time, it will come,” he continued.

“Yes of course, but as a competitor, we want to win all the matches, take the maximum points.

“We have to go back to work, hang on and go back to our bases in the first matches.”

Last season, Traore netted nine goals in 22 Dutch Eredivisie matches for Ajax.

Celta Vigo’s Senegalese-born midfielder Pape Cheikh Diop is reportedly a major transfer target for Olympique Lyon.

The French giants have lost Corentin Tolisso and Maxime Gonalons to Bayern Munich and Napoli respectively, leaving them in need of midfield reinforcements.

According to Le Progres, Lyon president Jean Michael Aulas has set his sights on landing Diop, who is also a target for Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur.

OL hope to steal Diop from under Spurs’ nose by offering €10m to Celta, with the hope that the transfer will be wrapped up by the weekend.

Diop, 20, was born in Senegal but moved to Spain at age 14 and has been on Celta’s books since 2013.

He has represented Spain at junior international level but remains eligible to switch his allegiance to the land of his birth.

Burkina Faso attacker Bertrand Traore is reportedly set to make a move from Chelsea to Olympique Lyon.

French media outlet L’Equipe reports that Traore will move to the French Ligue 1 in the summer and has told Lyon that he is keen to join them.

Chelsea and the French side are said to be in negotiations and a permanent transfer is expected to be completed.

Traore has spent two seasons on loan away from Chelsea, including last term when he was on the books of Dutch giants Ajax.

The Burkina Faso player notably helped Ajax reach the final of the UEFA Europa League, and was particularly impressive in the semifinal against Lyon.

The French side are the favourites to land Traore, with club president Jean-Michel Aulas confirming their interest, though he adds that other clubs are also circling.

“We want to bring Bertrand Traore, there are advanced contacts but many clubs are interested,” he said in a press conference where Lyon unveiled the signing of Fernando Marcal.

Juventus keeping tabs on Lyon’s Corentin Tolisso – sporting director | Football News |

Massimo Allegri has set a firm points total for Juve to achieve to guarantee their campaign ends with a Scudetto.

Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici has confirmed that Lyon’s Corentin Tolisso is one of the names on a list of summer transfer targets, although he says the club would face fierce competition for his services.

Tolisso, 22, said in January that he was “flattered” by Juve’s reported interest in him, but added he wanted to focus on the second half of the season with Lyon, who beat Roma to reach the last eight of the Europa League last week.

The midfielder’s contract with the Ligue 1 side expires in 2020, but it looks increasingly unlikely that he will see that deal out, with Paratici saying Juve are just one of a host of clubs keeping tabs on him.

“Yes, he’s a very good player — a player who all of the big clubs are following,” Paratici was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport. “Right now there are plenty of players that we are monitoring, then further down the line we will move for some of these.

Corentin Tolisso
Corentin Tolisso is contracted to Lyon until 2020.

“All of the players we are monitoring are of a high value, but then the transfer market is also about opportunities and we are not focusing on just one aspect.”

Paratici does not intend to enter into the market for a new coach next season, however, with current Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri — who has been linked with summer moves to Arsenal and Barcelona — receiving his full backing.

“We’re delighted with him,” Paratici said. “He’s obtained great results with us. He’s among the best coaches in the world and we’re happy to continue with Allegri. In fact, we’re delighted to. He’s a great person and a great coach and we have no doubts about our coach. We have every intention of continuing with him.”
