As Zimbabwean legends are set to face their Barcelona counterparts in a friendly this weekend, an ex-Warriors captain in Peter Ndlovu will feature in the match.

Ndlovu and former striker Benjani Mwaruwari are set to lead a cast of young Zimbabwean footballers in a high profile exhibition tie against the Spanish giants.

A 30-member delegation comprising of 20 former Barca greats will fly into Harare on November 11 for a match that shall be staged at the National Sports Stadium a day after.

According to reports from Zimbabwe, ex-FIFA World Cup winner Rivaldo Ferreira and Patrick Kluivert are among players coming.

Sports and Recreation Minister, Makhosini Hlongwane said the international friendly shall serve as a major tourist attraction among outsiders.

“The visit to Zimbabwe by the Barcelona legends is set to create a pitched positive furore not only in Zimbabwe but beyond its borders internationally thereby drawing a possible large contingent of tourists to throng either Harare to catch a glimpse of the local and visiting football icons,” Hlongwane said.

“This match conveniently dovetails government’s adoption of the community sport and recreation club system which envisages the realisation the realisation of the on-going initiative of establishing eight thousand soccer clubs across the country.”

The two world greats were in the country on two separate occasions this year with Kluivert also taken to President Robert Mugabe’s Gwanda youth interface rally.

Ahead of Algeria’s clash against Nigeria in their final Group B, 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers next week, former Desert Warriors players have backed new coach Rabah Madjer.

This comes after Madjer was named national coach for the fourth time in his career on October 18 after Lucas Alcaraz was dismissed following a disappointing World Cup qualification campaign.

Ex-internationals such as Billel Dziri, who played under Madjer in the 1990s, believe the 1987 African Footballer of the Year can win over his critics.

“The players will see his training methods and the quality of his training sessions,” he told BBC Sport.

“People say that it has been a long time since he has not coached, but he has lots of experience on the football pitch. We cannot neglect that fact.”

On the other hand, Omar Belbey, who played under Madjer at the 2002 CAF African Nations Cup, adds it could be unwise to ignore the latter’s extensive experience.

“When you have an ex-international with the career he had and all that he represents, that is a monstrous asset,” adds Belbey.

“We, the players, listened to what he had to say because he knows what he’s talking about.”

Madjer has since announced his squad for the Super Eagles clash set to be staged in Constantine on November 10, which will be followed by a friendly against the Central African Republic in Algiers on November 14.

Ivory Coast legends call on Serge Aurier to be more mature – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Graeme Jackson

Tuesday Oct 10, 2017. 17:00

Serge Aurier needs to bring more maturity to his career, according to Ivory Coast legends Didier Drogba and Kolo Toure.

The Elephants right-back has had his career marred by several controversial incidents in recent years, most recently an unnecessary sending off in his first Premier League start for Tottenham Hotspur.

The 24-year-old’s talents are not in doubt, but there is a worry that he will not fulfil his potential.

“Serge Aurier maybe has to make those mistakes to really understand and realise what he represents,” Drogba said.

“He’s a good person, he’s loyal, he wants to succeed. His problem is away from the pitch – he’s always given everything on the pitch.

“But you know that when there are kids who call your name and ask for autographs, you have to be careful with all your actions and gestures.”

Toure, who is now part of the Elephants’ coaching staff, added: “It’s a lack of maturity, quite simply.

“I think he must feel very bad about it. But he got carried away and didn’t realise the consequences.

“Serge is a really good guy, ask his teammates. He’s young. We’ve all been like that. We’ve all been through that stage when we’re young, playing the hard guy.”

Aurier will hope to return to Tottenham’s line-up for their home clash against Bournemouth in the Premier League this weekend.

Latest information from Zimbabwe is that the country’s ministry of Sport and Recreation, ZIFA and private players are working on a funding structure that will bring Barcelona Legends to the country.

The Blaugrana legends are set to play the Warriors in the first week of November as it is reported that Barcelona Legends captain, Patrick Kluivert and the team’s representative Rayco Garcia got the nod from the Government to stage the match.

Reports indicate that the former players, together with former Barca and Juventus midfielder, Edgar Davids arrived in the country on last week.

The duo met vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday at his offices and presented Barcelona shirts for the first family.

On Saturday they had a chance to meet President Mugabe in Gwanda when they attended the Presidential Youth interface rally.

According to All Africa Sports website, Sport and Recreation Minister, Makhosini Hlongwane said they have tied up all loose ends of the deal with the Barcelona Legends.

Hlongwane added that the match would be staged in the first week of November, and as part of promoting the game, Brazilian legend Ronaldinho would be coming in September.

“We will work on a structure to cater for the costs. The minister is working on the funding structure for the match, working with ZIFA, private players and the legends,” Hlongwane.

“We agreed to mount a series of promotional events to promote the match before it happens. As part of those events to promote the game, Ronaldinho will be coming in September.

“We agreed on a tournament between Barcelona Legends and the Warriors, the first week of November in Harare.

“ZIFA will guide us on which team will play on the day. They are responsible for the technical side of the game.

“The Minister said the tour by the legends is part of Sports Commission policy which has a key component of sports diplomacy.”

Stuart Baxter eyeing Bafana legends as assistant coaches

Phumzile Ngcatshe

Saturday Jun 17, 2017. 10:00

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter says he would like to rope in former national team players to join his technical team as assistant coaches.

Local reports indicate that the coach has dropped a hint regarding those who will help him in the national side.

Names such as ex-striker Shaun Bartlett and midfielder Quinton Fortune have been mentioned as examples.

Although U20 and U17 coaches, Thabo Senong and Molefi Ntseki helped Baxter as he faced Nigeria and Zambia in the 2019 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifier and in a friendly, he is likely to rope in one former Bafana player to join Senong.

“The technical team that we’ve had with us now (for Nigeria and Zambia) has been great. We just need to make sure that it can be permanent and that is fits in with what else we’re doing,” said Baxter.

“I still think there is room for an ex-player who’s embarked on his career as a coach – like a Shaun Bartlett‚ like Benni McCarthy‚ like a Quinton Fortune‚ Aaron Mokoena.

“Get those people involved at some level within the technical team. I’m not saying that they’ve all got to be assistants but get them involved.”

Bartlett is not new to coaching as he led Golden Arrows to promotion from the National First Division to the Premier Soccer League in the 2014/15 season and served as Owen Da Gama’s U23 assistant during the 2016 Rio Olympics.

On the other hand, Fortune has also been working on the touchline after completing his coaching badges as well as assisting former Manchester United teammate, Ole Gunnar-Solskjaer with Cardiff City’s U-21s.
