Arsenal’s Emery reveals January transfer desire

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery suggests he could look to fortify his defence when the January transfer window opens.

The Gunners have been amazing this season and at present occupy fifth place on the Premier League standings, getting beat just twice.

But Emery finds himself with just just one in good shape sweeper in Laurent Koscielny in advance of facing Southampton on Sunday.

Up initially however is a home clash in the Europa League with Qarabag on Thursday.

Konstantinos Mavropanos, Rob Keeping and Shkodran Mustafi are wounded although Sokratis Papastathopoulos is suspended.

Emery claimed: “I consider if we can take just one player to enable us at sweeper, I consider it truly is a very good option.

“The transfer (window) is not straightforward. Koscielny is coming back and for the team it truly is very important he is coming back.

“Then we are going to hold out and see how Mavropanos is improving upon with his accidents, simply because he is also a sweeper who can enable us.

“Another option we can play with two, with a few, and (comprehensive-backs) Nacho Monreal and (Stephan) Lichtsteiner can play in this position.

“I prefer to use, if we can, a expert sweeper.”

Borussia Dortmund will reportedly put Gabon star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang up for sale in the January transfer window.

It emerged over the weekend that Aubameyang has decided to leave BVB and has reportedly told his representatives to secure a move “as quickly as possible”.

BILD reports that Dortmund bosses will acquiesce to the player’s wishes, having been fighting a losing battle to keep the Panthers forward happy.

They will listen to offer starting from 60-million Euros in the New Year, alerting Premier League giants such as Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Aubameyang notably has a strong relationship with current Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, who worked with the player at Dortmund.

The German giants are already seeking a replacement and have been linked with moves for Jonathan Bamba (St Etienne), Moussa Dembele (Celtic) and Kasper Dolberg (Ajax).

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson believes that Ivorian international Wilfried Zaha will be a wanted man during the January transfer window.

Zaha is enjoying his football at the moment having scored three goals in his last five English Premier League (EPL) matches for Palace.

Hodgson, who is a former England head coach, has stated that the London-based side will receive offers for the 25-year-old winger-cum-striker.

“You can’t ever dismiss interest in any of your players,” Hodgson told the media.

“Wilfried Zaha is an obvious name, but there are other players that I wouldn’t be surprised if there were other clubs interested in.

“And we have to be prepared for that going into January.

Zaha was linked with a possible transfer to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year, but Palace managed to keep him.

“If offers come along for players who are doing well for us and we are not particularly anxious to lose them,” he continued.

“Then we will have to make decisions on what offers are to be turned down and what could be accepted.”

Zaha and his Palace team-mates will face Stoke City in an EPL match on Saturday.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Riyad Mahrez – Will he join Tottenham Hotspur in January?

Brian Lee

Thursday Nov 16, 2017. 19:00

Latest media reports in the United Kingdom reveal that Algeria and Leicester City winger, Riyad Mahrez is still eyeing a move away from the Foxes.

The Desert warriors international has been linked with a transfer from the King Power Stadium for some time and he is now linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

A report carried by the Daily Star suggests that the Lily Whites are set to benefit from bringing the Algerian in.

Mahrez has been in good form at Leicester this term, with the winger contributing five assists and scoring two goals in 11 English Premier League appearances.

Morever, the arrival of new coach Claude Puel seems to have fuelled something in as far as Mahrez’s performance is concerned.

The England-based website adds that manager Mauricio Pochettino is convinced that the 26-year-old could add value in his attacking options.

City, though, will be reluctant to lose one of their most-prized assets, but the emergence of Demarai Gray means that the blow may now not be quite as hard to take as it once would have been.

Although Spurs reportedly wanted to sign Mahrez in the English summer, they were unable to get a deal and could be tempted to test the water in January.

German Bundesliga club Schalke 04 are reportedly looking at re-signing Ghanaian defender Baba Rahman in the January transfer window.

The Black Stars left-back has returned to training at parent club Chelsea following a major knee injury he suffered while on international duty at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

Rahman spent the first half of last season on loan at Schalke and was a major hit with the German side, though he returned to Chelsea following his injury.

The Royal Blues tried to get Rahman back on loan at the start of the current campaign, but the 23-year-old was not fully recovered from his injury.

However, the Bundesliga outfit now believe they can convince Rahman to join them on loan for the rest of the season once the transfer window opens in the New Year.

“I would not rule out that we deal with Baba in the winter,” Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel told German media.

Algerian defender Faouzi Ghoulam could be on his way to Manchester City, if the English club can open talks with Napoli in the coming days.

The Sun reports that City are eyeing a cut-price deal for the Fennec Foxes left-back in the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old will be out of contract at the end of the current season and will soon be allowed to negotiate with interested parties in regards to a free transfer.

However, City manager Pep Guardiola is hoping to bring Ghoulam to the Etihad in January.

This is after French left-back Benjamin Mendy picked up a season-ending knee injury, leaving the Citizens short of options in the position.

However, City could face tough opposition from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool, who are also keeping close tabs on the Algerian.

Yet Guardiola’s men appear to have the inside lane, as they will face Napoli in the UEFA Champions League next week and plan on having talks with the Italian side.

Juventus’ Ghanaian Kwadwo Asamoah will have another chance to sign for Galatasaray when the transfer window opens in January 2018.

The versatile midfielder almost completed the move to Istanbul in the European summer, but the two clubs failed to agree on a transfer fee.

Asamoah is set to be out of contract at Juve from midway through next year and the Italian side will green light a transfer in the winter window.

The Black Stars veteran is no longer a regular in the first XI and is keen on a move to ensure he sees more playing time.

“In the end Juventus didn’t want to let him go,” Galatasaray chairman Dursun Ozbek told Fanatik.

“We already had an agreement with Asamoah, and we’ll repeat our offer during the winter transfer window.”

Asamoah has been on Juve’s books since joining from Udinese in 2012.

Senegal striker Diafra Sakho has hinted that he may be on his way out of West Ham United when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Teranga Lions attacker wanted to the leave the Hammers before the start of the 2017/18 season, but was unable to secure a transfer.

The 27-year-old old has yet to start a Premier League match this term, but this past weekend he came off the bench to score the only goal in a crunch win over Swansea City.

After his last-gasp strike against the Swans, Sakho hinted that January could bring a change in his career path.

“It’s not easy to prove to the people what I can do on the pitch when I only play for 10 minutes,” said the Senegal striker.

“But I don’t need to knock on the manager’s door – he knows what I can do, now I have to force my way into the team. I just want to enjoy being part of this team and we will see what happens in January.”

Sakho will now turn his attention to Senegal’s upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde on Saturday.

Jean-Michael Seri to Barca back on in January? – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Graeme Jackson

Thursday Sep 14, 2017. 12:00

Nice and Ivory Coast midfielder Jean-Michael Seri could yet sign for Barcelona, with the La Liga club set to revive their interest in the January transfer window.

Seri almost joined the Spanish giants last month after they agreed a deal with his French club for a €40m move.

However, the Catalans pulled the plug and instead focused their energy on trying to sign primary target Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool – a transfer which they never managed to complete.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Barca remain admirers of the Elephants player and will make another effort to secure his services in Europe’s winter window.

Seri, 26, recently emphasised that he has put the failed transfer behind him and is fully focused on performing for Nice in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Europa League.

The midfielder is set to feature in their opening Europa League group stage match against Zulte Waregem this evening.

Faouzi Ghoulam set for January transfer? – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Graeme Jackson

Wednesday Sep 06, 2017. 12:00

Algerian left-back Faouzi Ghoulam is reportedly set to be sold by Italian giants Napoli in the January transfer window.

According to The Sun, Premier League sides Chelsea and Liverpool, as well as Italian champions Juventus, are set to battle over the defender’s signature.

Ghoulam’s contract at Stadio San Paulo runs out at the end of the current season and he has thus far refused to sign an extension.

Should the Algerian’s contract lapse, he will be able to leave Napoli as a free agent in mid-2018.

The Italian club is therefore likely to sell the player – albeit for a cut price – in January if they cannot convince him to pen a new deal.

Both Liverpool and Chelsea have been in the market for a left-back, and Ghoulam, 26, is a player in the prime years of his career.

Baba Rahman’s proposed Schalke move postponed to January – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

Schalke defender Baba Rahman

Thursday Aug 24, 2017. 15:00

Baba Rahman will not be joining Schalke 04 in the current transfer window, with the German club withdrawing from talks with Chelsea over a proposed transfer.

The Royal Blues were hoping to sign the left-back on loan for the course of a season, just as they did a year ago.

However, Rahman is still recovering from a major knee injury he sustained while representing the Black Stars at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

As a result, Schalke management have stepped back from negotiations, ending any hopes of a move for the player in the current transfer window.

Rahman’s agent, Sascha Empacher, has confirmed to Fussball Transfers that talks with Schalke have been postponed until January 2018.

The German club remain keen on re-signing the Ghana star, but will wait until the European winter transfer window, giving him more time to recover and regain fitness.
