Valverde: Spain’s 6-1 victory over Argentina could be distracting

Ernesto Valverde, Barcelona

Ernesto Valverde

Barcelona Manager, Ernesto Valverde believes that the 6-1 win recorded by Spain over Argentina in an International friendly match in preparations for the summer World Cup can be distracting and ultimately dangerous.

The 2010 World Champions thrashed a Messi-less 2014 finalist after Isco scored a hat-trick and other goals from Diego Costa, Thiago Alcantara, and Iago Aspas completed the massacre.

Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has earlier cautioned his side of excessive excitement after extending his unbeaten run in charge to 18 matches stating that a friendly victory means nothing for his side’s World Cup hopes.

Vaverde stands with Lopetegui as he stated that he is unsure if the 6-1 victory is a good thing for the team at this point in time. He noted that over-confidence could be a problem for Spain seeing that they made light weight of an Argentina team that consists of many stars.

“We can think that we will win it all,” said Valverde. “6-1 is a wide margin, but that’s all.

“It’s dangerous because it can make you think that you have more points than you have before you start.

“[Argentina] lost a friendly game, but that doesn’t mean anything. The World Cup has not started. There’s nothing won by Spain or lost by Argentina.”

“There are also talks with South Korea from Asia but we are waiting for the World Cup draw,” Abou-Reida said.

Algeria will face South Korea in an international friendly in May 2018, according to Le Buteur.

World Cup qualifiers Korea are looking to secure matches against teams they may face in the finals in Russia.

And with three North African teams having secured passage to the global tournament – Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco – Algeria represent a team with a similar style of play.

Le Buteur reports that the match against Korea is confirmed for May, though the final details must still be buttoned down.

It is expected to be played in a European country, with the Asian side set to camp in the continent ahead of the tournament in Russia in June and July.

Panama and Costa Rica – two further 2018 qualifiers – are also keen on meeting Algeria in friendlies, though these matches could be brought forward to the international window in March.

The Fennec Foxes and coach Rabah Madjer will use the matches as preparation for the resumption of 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in the second half of 2018.

Egyptian FA boss reveals why they turned down a friendly against the USA – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

by

Wednesday Nov 15, 2017. 15:00

The Egyptian Football Association’s chairman, Hany Abou-Rida has announced why they turned down an offer to play a friendly against the United States national team in January.

The Pharaohs are set to feature in their first FIFA World Cup since 1990 after finishing their qualifying group stage matches with a 1-1 draw against Ghana.

However, Abou-Rida says they cannot rush to play friendlies but will rather wait for the World Cup draw set be conducted at next month.

“We will not rush in playing a friendly. We will wait for the results of the draw and will schedule friendlies based on the international schedule,” Abou-Rida said to KingFut.

“I received an offer to play a friendly against the USA in January and refused to stop the league for a week and to play without the players abroad.

“I told the technical staff that it’s better to play friendlies with all the players especially since there are priorities including finishing the league season.

“The league this season has seen many strong games and comparable levels between the teams and we hope to produce new talents.”

On the other hand, the EFA boss adds that he’s not concerned with the results of the World Cup draw as Egypt will be placed in Pot 3.

“I do not care about the draw or who we wish to play since all the games in the World Cup will be hard. We will either play Brazil or Germany,” adds Abou-Rida.

“However, personally, I do not care about any team other than Germany who have been playing very well for the last two years.

“Brazil, on the other hand, play football in an open manner and have wonderful talent.”

Latest information regarding the friendly international between Kenya and Zambia is that it has been called off.

Media reports in the East African country reval that the match set for November 14 will not go ahead as planned.

This is after Football Kenya Federation CEO Robert Muthomi confirmed on Thursday the match had been called off due to logistical issues.

Coach Wedson Nyirenda is preparing his side to face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in their final Group B match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on November 11.

NIGERIA TO TRAVEL TO RUSSIA VIA CHARTERED FLIGHT

“It’s unfortunate that Zambia will not honour the friendly due to what we have understood to be logistical issues around the team’s travel,” said Muthomi in a statement.

The failure to see the encounter going on has left the FKF looking for an alternative after failing to secure a friendly against Rwanda.

It was reported that the pre-arranged game against Amavubi failed to materialise because they have an African Nations Championships play-off clash against Ethiopia to honour.

The news of Zambia’s cancellation comes a day after Harambee Stars coach Stanley Okumbi had named a provisional squad of 28-local based players for this assignment.

Nigeria and Serbia are reportedly working on arranging a friendly match as part of the preparations for the 2018 World Cup finals.

Both nations secured qualification for the tournament earlier this month, and Score Nigeria reports that officials are working behind the scenes to button down the details.

Temi Gold, the president of the Serbia-Nigeria Chamber of Commerce, has revealed that Serbian representatives have reached out to the Nigerian Football Federation.

The Super Eagles secured their place at Russia 2018 after winning Group B of Africa’s third round with a game to spare. The West Africans still have a dead rubber clash away to Algeria to fulfill next month.

Serbia, meanwhile, topped Group D in Europe’s preliminaries ahead of Republic of Ireland, Wales, Austria, Georgia and Moldova.

The teams have met in just one prior match, a pre-World Cup friendly in 1998 in Belgrade which was won 3-0 by the hosts (who were then known as Yugoslavia).

Ahead of their final Group E, 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ghana on November 12, Egypt will play a friendly international match against the United Arab Emirates.

Coach Hector Cuper’s men have qualified for the World Cup in Russia for the first time since 1990 after beating Congo 2-1 a week ago, thanks to a brace from Mohamed Salah.

The EFA received an official request earlier from their counterparts in the UAE which was approved by Egypt’s head coach.

It is expected that Cuper will field the players who missed out on playing in the qualifiers during the team’s match against the Black Stars.

Frank Acheampong has withdrawn from Ghana’s squad ahead of their friendly against Saudi Arabia.

The Black Stars will face the Saudis in Jeddah on Tuesday for an exhibition game, following their elimination from the 2018 World Cup qualifiers this past weekend.

Ghana held Group E rivals Uganda to a goalless draw in Kampala on Saturday, but Sunday night’s win for Egypt over Congo has ensured that the North Africans will head to the finals in Russia next year.

Acheampong was one of Ghana’s best performers in the stalemate against the Cranes and coach James Kwesi Appiah would have wanted the player to be available.

However, the 23-year-old asked to return early to his Chinese club Tianjin Teda, who are currently battling the prospect of relegation from the country’s top flight league.

This means coach Appiah will have only 20 players available for the match against Saudi Arabia.

Liverpool to be without Salah for tonight’s friendly – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Africa

by
Graeme Jackson

Wednesday Jul 12, 2017. 13:00

Liverpool will not be able to field Mohamed Salah in tonight’s preseason friendly against Tranmere Rovers due to immigration rules.

The Reds will face the Rovers at Prenton Park this evening for the start of their preseason campaign.

The 25-year-old Egyptian has yet to exit the country and return in order to finalise his work permit, as part of a standard immigration procedure.

It’s uncertain as to whether this issue will be resolved before Liverpool’s match against Wigan Athletic on Friday, but if not then Salah will have to wait for the match against Crystal Palace on July 19 in the Premier League Asia Trophy that will take place in Hong Kong.

“Mo Salah is here in training but cannot play because of the rules, so that’s what we have to accept,” Klopp told Liverpool official website.

“We will try to get the working permission or the visa, I’m not sure what it is we need to get but we have to go to Paris and leave him there for a day or two and then he’ll come back. We are hopeful he can play soon,” Klopp added.

Cameroon coach to make major changes for Colombia friendly – 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup

by
Graeme Jackson

Tuesday Jun 13, 2017. 19:00

Hugo Broos has revealed that he will make major changes to his Cameroon line-up for their friendly clash against Colombia tonight.

The Indomitable Lions will take on the South Americans in Getafe at 20h30 CAT tonight, with the former using the match as preparation for the Confederations Cup.

Cameroon come into the game having defeated Morocco 1-0 in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier this past weekend, and Broos has explained that he will shuffle his pack for the match against Colombia.

“There will be a lot of changes – with regard to the victory over Morocco – because we played three matches in a week,” said Broos, who highlighted the importance of the friendly.

“It’s a different [kind of] football, so tomorrow [Tuesday], more than the result, what matters to me is to see how the team works.

“We do not have the experience of other years with players, that’s why this tournament is important to prepare for what comes.

“We will have very difficult matches in September and then the World Cup [in 2018] if we [qualify].

“For this group [of players] it will be very good to have that experience, because for me and for my team the Confederations is only a good experience.”

Cameroon will open their Confederations Cup campaign with a Group B clash against Chile on Sunday. They will also face Australia and Germany in the tournament in Russia.
