Black referees ‘blocked’ in English football

Black referees are failing to get into the higher reaches of English football because of the way they are assessed, a campaigner stated Tuesday.

Reuben Simon, an ambassador for black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) officers at Ref Assist United kingdom, stated overt racism at worst and unconscious bias at most effective had been equally taking part in a portion in blocking the development of non-white referees.

Uriah Rennie was the final black referee in the increased reaches of the English game prior to retiring in 2009.

There are no BAME referees at this time doing the job in the top rated 4 divisions, and only just one in the National League.

Match assessors at all ranges of English football analyze the performance of referees, with their conclusions playing a vital role in how far up the league ladder officials climb.

But Simon claimed a new system of assessing the assessors was desired to fight discrimination.”It is really a myth that you can find a lack of black referees — there are masses at grassroots level but they are not progressing up the pyramid,” Simon
explained to Britain’s Push Affiliation.”Why? They are staying blocked. There is a ceiling for black referees and it is non-league.”When a footballer is pretty excellent it’s evident and it is in the
manager’s fascination to select them.

So even managers with racist views have
picked black footballers.”But conclusions about referees are extra subjective.”Simon stated when there was “very little wrong” with observers generally
being “white chaps of a unique age” even very well-which means officers
could discriminate against black referees.”Most try to be as fair as possible.

But there is also no dilemma there is a good deal of unconscious bias in the rankings,” he added.Simon stated the Football Association, English football‘s governing overall body, could get started to rectify the trouble.”Let’s fake that every single black ref is rubbish — it truly is possible, not
probable — but let us look at that by sending out a ghost observer to the
similar games as these assessors who give black refs weak marks.

And let us do it a couple times, just to make sure,” he mentioned.Simon’s reviews will include to the debate about racism in football, with black players these types of as England’s Danny Rose and Raheem Sterling the two lamenting what they see as a lack of major motion by football
chiefs in tackling the situation.

The influential midfielder played a key role in helping Senegal book their place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals which will be hosted by Russia.

Nicknamed the Lions of Teranga, Senegal defeated South Africa 2-0 in a Group D match at the Peter Makaba Stadium in Polokwane last week Friday and they qualified as group winners.

Gueye played the entire match in the middle of the park – protecting the Senegal defence along side West Ham United defender-cum-midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate.

Aliou Cisse decided to rest some of Senegal’s key players ahead of their final Group D match which was against South Africa at the Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor in Dakar on Tuesday.

However, Gueye and Senegal captain Kouyate kept their place in the starting line-up as the Lions of Teranga secured a 2-1 win over Bafana Bafana in a dead rubber.

Gueye, 28, took to social media to express his joy after Senegal qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 16 years:

The midfield enforcer will now focus on Everton‘s upcoming English Premier League (EPL) match against Crystal Palace which will be played in London on Sunday.

Before the FIFA international break, Gueye helped the Toffees end their four-match winless run in the EPL with a 3-2 win over Watford at home.

A victory for Everton over Palace, will see the Toffees move further away from the relegation zone.

The African midfielder joined English Premier League (EPL) side Southampton FC on a five-year deal from Italian Serie A giants Juventus prior to the 2017/18 campaign.

However, the midfield maestro took to the EPL like a duck to water – producing good displays for Southampton and he was deservedly named the club’s October Player of the Month.

The former French youth international, who made his debut for Gabon in 2015, told Southampton’s official website that the style of the league suits him.

“It’s really nice to have the fans talking and singing about me,” Lemina said.

“I feel very comfortable in the Premier League, the style of our play and the style of the league suits me and brings the best out of me.

“I am happy to be here and to have made a good start.”

The 24-year-old has made seven EPL appearances for Southampton – having missed the team’s last two league matches due to an injury.

He is expected to resume training after the current FIFA international break.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Mohamed Salah – One of the best English Premier League signings – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool

Austin Ditlhobolo

Monday Nov 13, 2017. 19:00

The 25-year-old forward has been hailed as one of the best signings in the English Premier League (EPL) by Liverpool FC icon Robbie Fowler.

Liverpool signed Salah from Italian giants AS Roma on a long-term contract for an initial €42m fee that could rise to up to €50m.

The fee was a club record, eclipsing the £35m spent on English striker Andy Carroll in 2011. Salah has since hit the ground running at Liverpool.

The Egyptian international has impressively netted 12 goals in 17 games across all competitions since joining the EPL giants.

Legendary English striker Fowler, who is Liverpool’s all-time top scorer with 346 goals, praised Salah’s qualities and goalscoring form.

“I think certainly at the start of the year there was plenty of goals in them, a few missed chances,” Fowler told ESPN.

“All the pressure was put on the defenders then because they were conceding goals,”

“But now they’re scoring goals and everything is taken away from the defense, I think we are quite happy the way we’re going, three good wins,” the 42-year-old continued.

“Certainly the signing of Mo Salah has probably been one of the signings of the Premier League so far.

“With the pace he has got he will have chances all day and he needs to keep up the good form because he is important for Liverpool,” he concluded.

Latest information from England is that the English Football Association has denied handing Nigerian international Ogenyi Onazi his work permit.

The Super Eagles midfielder has been denied a work permit to play for English Championship side Birmingham City.

According to the BBC website, Birmingham had agreed terms with the 24-year-old to sign him from Turkish club, Trabzonspor.

However, the FA has decided against handing the player a work permit for Onazi last week and an appeal has reportedly been made.

The appeal made by the club was also rejected on Wednesday despite Onazi being a regular in the Nigerian national team.

RICARDO MANNETTI CALLS ON WINDHOEK SUPPORT

Onazi has featured 38 times for the Super Eagles and helped them to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations as well as qualifying and reaching the last 16 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

However, it is mentioned that Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the past two editions of the CAF African Nations Cup has affected his chances of securing a work permit to play in the English Championship.

Despite appearing in over 80% of the national team games, Onazi failed to earn a permit after the FA considered the West African nation’s world ranking in the past two years.

Ghanaian Andrew Ayew ready for the 2017/18 English Premier League campaign

by
Phumzile Ngcatshe

Sunday Jul 30, 2017. 10:09

Ghana and West ham striker Andrew Ayew says he feels good and is looking forward to the 2017/18 English Premier League season.

The Hammers forward is hoping a full pre-season will help him pick up where he left off when the Premier Leagaue campaign begins.

Ayew ended the 2016/17 season in fine form, scoring five goals in the 13 appearances after returning from the Africa Cup of Nations in mid-February.

However, he admits the pre-season is very important and says he wants to ensure he prepares well this time around.

“I’m feeling good and working hard. We had long days in Austria and now we’re just at the beginning in Germany and we have a few games to come,” he told West Ham TV.

“We’re working hard here, trying to get fit, working together and getting to know each other, so it’s sweet.

“Pre-season is something which is very, very important and, for me, I’ve not been able to have a real pre-season for a long time because of the international games.

“I have always been coming back later, so to start the pre-season with the squad is quite good.

“I think I’m going to have a month or more with the squad before the pre-season starts so it’s a good opportunity for me to get myself back together and to feel good before the season.

“I think I was getting there [to my best form]. It was not my optimum, but I was getting there bit by bit by playing games. For me, it was a shame the season came to an end because I was starting to feel better after my injury.”

by
Graeme Jackson

Sunday Jun 18, 2017. 14:00

According to a new report, Arsenal is the only English team Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would consider playing for.

BILD claims that Aubameyang’s only love in the Premier League is Arsenal, though the London side’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season makes them an unlikely destination.

The Gabon star has been strongly linked with a move away from Borussia Dortmund in the European summer.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain and Italian side AC Milan have been linked with the player, as have the Premier League trio of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea.

Aubameyang was the Bundesliga’s leading goal scorer last season, netting 31 strikes for BVB in the German top flight.
