Eric Bailly will look to shrug off the disappointment of Ivory Coast’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup when he features for Manchester United this weekend.

Bailly was suspended for the Elephants’ 2-0 loss to Morocco last weekend which saw the North Africans secure top spot in the group and return to the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

Nonetheless, the 23-year-old took to his Facebook page to express his pain and apologise to the Ivorian faithful.

“Bad time for our national team I’m a part of. Our apologies for the bad performance of the team during our last games, for me the important was neither the game against Mali nor against Morocco, but rather our bad results in official games since the beginning of the year,” wrote Bailly.

The best way for the centre-back to put the Elephants’ failure behind him is to perform strongly at club level.

Bailly will be fresh and rested for Manchester United’s upcoming matches this weekend and next midweek.

The Red Devils will first host Newcastle United for a high-profile Premier League clash on Saturday evening, followed by a trip to Basel next Wednesday in which they will look to secure progression into the UEFA Champions League knockout stage.

Eric Bailly will look to return to Manchester United’s starting XI for tomorrow’s high-profile clash at home to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

The Ivory Coast defender has not featured for the Red Devils since their 4-1 win over CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League exactly a month ago today.

Following that match – which was Bailly’s UCL debut – he was rested for the home win over Crystal Palace on September 30, and then jetted off for international duty with the Ivory Coast.

The 23-year-old picked up an injury while featuring for the Elephants and has been out of commission ever since.

United have not fared particularly well in his absence, failing to win either of their two Premier League matches in the period (0-0 v Liverpool and 1-2 v Huddersfield Town).

However, Bailly returned to training this week and is in line to start against Spurs in tomorrow’s early-afternoon kick-off at Old Trafford.

It’s a key match for the Red Devils, who need a powerful performance (and a win) to convince their critics that they can challenge rivals Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Bailly was in good spirits this week upon returning to training, and posted this funny entry in his official Twitter page:

The Egyptian Pharaohs have a tough task this weekend as they welcome the Red Devils of Congo for their penultimate 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

Ahead of the clash, the Pharaohs need a win to boost their chances of reaching the global tournament in Russia next year.

Coach Hector Cuper wants a disciplined approach to consolidate their top spot.

Sitting at the top with nine points, Egypt will hope to see Ghana beating Uganda on Saturday and they will have to win to secure a World Cup berth.

“Congo is a good team combining players with great individual skill, but we are ready for the game,” Cuper said.

“We have studied Congo well. We will be focusing on their weak points, but we are not sure about their squad for the next game, especially since they may call up new people.”

Fresh from a win and a loss to the Cranes last month, the North African giants are motivated to play in front of their home crowd in Alexandria.

Shifting focus to the visitors, the Red Devils are also out to cause an upset and keep the group open as they seek a win.

Congo sit at the bottom of the table with one point from three losses and one draw.

Fresh from a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Black Stars at home, the Congolese have their pride to salvage come Sunday in Egypt.

Coach Sebastien Migne faces a tough assignment against a strong Egyptian team, but he will push to shock their hosts.

The Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria is the venue on Sunday for the crunch qualifier at 19:00 (CAT).

Ivory Coast international Serge Aurier has reportedly said his goodbyes to his Paris Saint Germain teammates, ahead of a possible move to the English Premier League.

According to French-based journalist, Jonathan Johnson, Aurier has waved what will be his now former teammates ‘Au Revoir’ as he sets his sights on England switch.

Aurier, 24, last week told the French giants that he was eager to continue his career elsewhere, having fallen behind Dani Alves in the pecking order at the club.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be front-runners for the defender’s signature with Inter Milan having also expressed their interest in signing the fullback.

Tottenham Hotspur are also reportedly keen on landing want-away Paris Saint Germain defender Serge Aurier before the end of the transfer window.

Spurs are in for another right-back following the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City for a whopping £50 million.

With money in the bank and PSG open to sell following their capture of Dani Alves, Spurs could land the Ivory Coast international for half the price they demanded for Walker.

Interest from Manchester United and Inter Milan, though, could up Aurier’s price with The Sun reporting that the 24-year-old’s wage demands could throw a spanner in the works for Spurs.

Only three of Mauricio Pochettino’s men earn over £100,000-a-week (Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen and Harry Kane) with the club unlikely to offer Aurier the money he demands.

“I am happy with our team performance and I am glad I scored an important goal. It was an all-round performance from the entire team that has culminated in a good season for us despite missing out on the title,” Wanyama told the SuperSport website.

“It’s always a nice feeling scoring for your team on important occasions.”

The Harambee Stars skipper joined Mauricio Pochettino’s men from Southampton last summer, reuniting with his former Saints boss in the process.
