The Zimbabwean Football Association has roped in Sunday Chidzambwa as caretaker coach for the national side for the upcoming Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) tournament.

The move comes after ZIFA accepted the invitation to play as a guest nation at this year’s edition of the CECAFA tournament to be hosted in Kenya.

Zimbabwe will join Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Sudan and Somalia for the tournament set to be staged between November 25 and December 9.

Known as ‘Mhofu’, the highly-experienced coach led Zimbabwe to their first Africa Cup of Nations qualification in 2004.

Meanwhile, he has also enjoyed considerable success in the Southern African region, winning this year’s Cosafa Cup hosted in South Africa in July.

The ZPC Kariba coach will be looking to further enhance his already impressive CV when he leads the team at the tournament.

Although he faces player availability challenges, Chidzambwa will have to pick his squad before the Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League programme finishes.

However, by the time the last round of matches are played, the Warriors will already be in Kenya which means some clubs may not be able to release their players.

Zimbabwean and ZPC Kariba coach Sunday Chidzambwa says the Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League is difficult to predict.

The decorated manager said it will be difficult for Dynamos to win the race for the title and believes either FC Platinum or Ngezi Platinum will triumph.

However, Chidzambwa says there is still too much at stake and anything can happen as they prepare to face Platinum on Tuesday.

“It is not going to be an easy game. FC Platinum want to win the league and we also want to finish the season very strongly.

“We would love to finish in a respectable position and we are going to fight until the end of the season. We have prepared well for the game but you know football is football and anything can happen but we have prepared well.

“The two Platinum teams have a good chance to win it. They have a better chance of winning the title than anybody else.

“Any of the top four teams still have a chance of winning the title but FC Platinum and Ngezi Platinum have the best chance of winning the league.”

Meanwhile, FC Platinum boss Norman Mapeza adds they are moving in the right direction and says they just need to win their games.

“I think we are moving in the right direction. We just need to win our games. Ngezi is on top of us on better goal difference,” adds Mapeza.

“At this stage of the season we are not worried about goals, we just need to collect maximum points.”

Zimbabwe is set to retain the services of coach Sunday Chidzambwa for their upcoming two international friendly matches against Lesotho and Namibia.

The Warriors are set to meet the Likoena and the Brave Warriors during the FIFA break next month, but ZIFA is yet to announce the move.

On the other hand, the team is also set to play in the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) Challenge Cup set for Kenya at the end of November.

Chidzambwa took over the national team for the COSAFA Cup in South Africa where they won the tournament.

However, ZIFA extended his mandate as a reward for winning the regional tournament when his interim tenure was extended for the 2018 African Nations Championship Qualifiers.

ZIFA’s Xolisani Gwesela told News Day Sport they will announce the Warriors coach for the three assignments this week.

“We will advise by the end of this week,” Gwesela said.

However, a source confided that the ZIFA leadership has once again picked Chidzambwa for the team’s next matches.

“Sunday will continue with his role and they have already contacted him. Negotiations have started and I don’t think he will turn down the offer,” adds a source.

“They want to retain the technical team that won the Cosafa tournament and that shouldn’t be a problem because they have worked well.”

Media reports in Zimbabwe reveal that ZPC Kariba FC coach Sunday Chidzambwa was secretly recorded while taking a swipe at the club’s hierarchy.

Chidzambwa was allegedly sharing the real reasons why he has decided to quit the club at the end of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.

The report follows Chidzambwa’s announcement last week that he would step down, saying he let down the club and its supporters having failed to win anything in his three years at the club.

However, the audio reveals the animosity between Chidzambwa and the club’s executive being the real reason why the experienced mentor has decided to call it quits.

In the leaked audio, Chidzambwa and goalkeeper coach Brena Msiska are heard talking to an unidentified man revealing their reasons for quitting.

“This executive came saying they know all about football and made it very clear that they want to hire their own coach, not us whom they found already at the club. [Tungamirai] Mazarire has no respect, he belittled me last week, imagine he told me that his executive doesn’t respect my CV saying their executive know a lot about football,” Chidzambwa is heard in the audio.

Chidzambwa went further to say Mazarire, who is the club chairman, had told the coaches they do not get instructions from them (coaches) on which players to bring into the club.

The former Warriors coach alleged in the recording that the players are not happy when their winning bonuses are taxed.

However, the coach has since refuted the recording to the NewsDay website saying: “I heard about the audio, but I will not say much. How can somebody record people having a bar talk? That is bad.”

“I have failed the Kariba community and my employer. It’s an honourable thing for me to quit now, but I will see out my contract by end of December” he said to the News Day website.

Kariba suffered their first home defeat to a fired-up Ngezi side that is gunning for their first league title since they were promoted into the top-flight division.

The victory has elevated coach Tonderai Ndiraya’s Ngezi to the top of the table as he expressed delight in the victory.

ZPC Kariba coach Sunday Chidzambwa has threatened to leave the club if his players do not show a sense of urgency.

It is reported that the coach is crumbling under pressure in this season’s tightly contested Zimbabwean Premiership race.

The experienced manager has threatened to walk away from the team if he does not get a positive response from his players following their lifeless displays in their last three matches.

It is mentioned that the 1-0 loss at the hands of Caps United on Sunday has pushed the legendary Zimbabwean coach to consider quitting the club.

Kariba are eighth on the log standings and 11 points adrift of leaders Ngezi Platinum Stars.

“Our problem is we are not fighting. I am going to talk to the players. If they don’t want to fight, then I may as well resign,” said Chidzambwa.

“We have very good players. The only thing we have to do is fight for three points.

“I think we also had some new youngsters in there. We didn’t fight. You don’t win games when you don’t fight. You must put maximum effort. Our players are not doing that.

“As a result I get the flak and get fired. If they are not prepared to fight I will go away. Maybe, they want someone who they can fight for.

“I mean look at CAPS United, you can count on maybe three or four players, but everybody was fighting, everybody wanted to win.

“They were chasing after every ball whether defensive or offensive. They were chasing for everything, but ours (were) too nice.”

ZPC Kariba coach Sunday Chidzambwa has rued their 1-0 defeat at the hands of Caps United in the Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League on Sunday.

Chidzambwa says they have themselves to blame for the defeat as they did not fight, thus allowing the Green machine to claim the three points.

Although United were struggling to collect the full three points in their previous matches, they will now hope to maintain the winning run if they are to defend the league title, let alone avoid a relegation dogfight.

AUBAMEYANG TEMPTED BY CHINESE OFFER

A single goal through Dominic Chungwa in the 61st minute ensured United ease their win-less run as well as allowing coach Lloyd Chitembwe a sigh of relief.

“In today’s defeat, we have ourselves to blame. We did not fight at all, especially in the first half and thus we never created any chances,” Chidzambwa said to the News Day.

“We only started playing football when Caps United has scored. We have to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask ourselves whether we want to play football.

“The players were not prepared for a fight at all. I will go to the dressing room and ask them if they want to fight for me or not.

“If they do not want, then I will be prepared to resign. When players do not fight they put pressure on the coach.

On the other hand, United’s assistant coach Fungai Kwashi said he was pleased with the win, but hey will not get carried away.

“We are pleased with the win. We had the confidence that we would get the three points, but we will not get carried away because we still have a lot of work to do in the next match against Tsholotsho,” Kwashi adds.
