Andres Iniesta to miss Barcelona game at Athletic Bilbao with thigh strain

Shaka Hislop and Ross Dyer try their hand at predicting the notable week 10 fixtures in La Liga.

Barcelona will be without Andres Iniesta for this weekend’s game against Athletic Bilbao, but Javier Mascherano will make the trip despite skipping training on Friday with a fever.

Iniesta has not trained for the last few days due to a thigh strain and is also a major doubt for Tuesday’s Champions League game against Olympiakos.

The midfielder, who signed a contract for life earlier this month, has featured regularly this season, playing in 12 of 15 games under Ernesto Valverde.

Mascherano has also been unable to train but Valverde has included him in the 20-man squad for Saturday’s game against Athletic in the hope that he recovers in time.

The Argentine has not been a regular this season, with Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti often preferred, but he has started the last two games at centre-back.

In the case that he is not able to play, Barca B’s David Costas or Oriol Busquets will step in, having both been included in the first team squad for the first ever time.

Thomas Vermaelen will also miss the game at San Mames due to a hip problem which he picked up in the midweek Copa del Rey win against Real Murcia.

In addition to Iniesta and Vermaelen, Barca are also without Rafinha, Ousmane Dembele, Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal.

However, left-back Jordi Alba has recovered from the thigh strain which kept him out of the last three games and will make the trip to the Basque Country.

Barcelona lead La Liga from Valencia by four points and are looking to make it 14 games unbeaten in all competitions this weekend.

Nice and Ivory Coast midfielder Jean-Michael Seri could yet sign for Barcelona, with the La Liga club set to revive their interest in the January transfer window.

Seri almost joined the Spanish giants last month after they agreed a deal with his French club for a €40m move.

However, the Catalans pulled the plug and instead focused their energy on trying to sign primary target Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool – a transfer which they never managed to complete.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Barca remain admirers of the Elephants player and will make another effort to secure his services in Europe’s winter window.

Seri, 26, recently emphasised that he has put the failed transfer behind him and is fully focused on performing for Nice in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Europa League.

The midfielder is set to feature in their opening Europa League group stage match against Zulte Waregem this evening.

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly trying to sign Ivorian Jean-Michael Seri to ‘f*ck’ Barcelona, according to the player’s agent.

The Elephants midfielder has become a highly-regarded player following his standout form for Nice and is a major transfer target for some of Europe’s biggest names.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hostpur have been linked with the 26-year-old, while earlier in the week Spanish giants Barcelona appeared to have struck a deal to bring him to the Camp Nou.

However, Seri remains at Nice and their Ligue 1 rivals PSG are now looking to throw a spanner in the works by stealing the player from under Barca’s noses.

The Parisian club has already had controversial dealings with the Catalans this transfer window, smashing the world record fee to sign Brazilian attacker Neymar earlier in the month.

“It was possible to reach an agreement as Barcelona and Nice were negotiating,” Seri’s agent Franklin Mala told RAC1.

“On Tuesday, they were in France, talking about technical aspects but they already knew Seri’s capabilities.

“PSG came three days ago. Now PSG is putting pressure on the club to take the player, it’s crazy. They just want to do it to f**k Barca.”

Reports of an imminent transfer to Barcelona for Ivorian midfielder Jean-Michael Seri are just rumours, according to Nice general manager Julien Fournier.

The Elephants player has been strongly linked with a transfer to the Spanish giants, who are reportedly ready to exercise a €40m buyout clause in his contract.

But Fournier told Sport: “We haven’t negotiated with Barca nor do I know of any negotiations lined up in the next few days.

“They’re just rumours, so we haven’t set a price for Seri.

“I think the player will stay with us this season.

“It’s true that he is open to listening to offers but he’s also happy at Nice whether we qualify for the group stages of the Champions League or not.”

Seri is set to feature for the French club in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier tonight, as they look to overturn a 0-2 deficit against Italian side Napoli.
