Philippe Coutinho completed his much-anticipated transfer to Nou Camp on Sunday for a staggering fee of £142m which makes him the most expensive player to be signed in January and the second most expensive player in history only after his Brazilian friend, Neymar who moved from Barcelona to join Paris Saint Germain for £200m in the summer.
As a result, Croatian midfielder, who will now play as a partner to the new signing in Barcelona’s middle of the park alongside veteran, Andres Iniesta believes Barcelona spent too much on the former Liverpool man.
“My opinion doesn’t matter, but the price has gone a bit high, that’s what the market dictates,” he said.
“Every great player is welcome here. I congratulate the president and everyone else who made it possible for him to be here.
“He is one of the family now, we are going to enjoy him a lot, he’s now at the biggest club in the world.”
Coutinho is reportedly signed as a long-term successor of Barcelona captain, Andres Iniesta, and Rakitic looks forward to playing with the talented Brazilian.
“We are happy another player has joined us, one who is among the very best,” Rakitic stated after their 3-0 win over Levante on Sunday.
“Obviously, he can’t play in the Champions League, but we already knew that.
“He will help us in La Liga and hopefully the Copa del Rey, but we must give him time to settle.”
