Cedric Bakambu became the first African player to receive Spanish La Liga’s Player of the Month award, following his exploits in the month of October.

The Villarreal forward was presented with the accolade on Sunday, ahead of the club’s 3-2 defeat to Sevilla in which he found the back of the net for his ninth goal of the league season.

The Democratic Republic of Congo international scored six goals in four league games during the month of October – netting a hat-trick Eibar.

The 26-year-old edged Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Valencia’s Gonçalo Guedes to the accolade, that has been in existence since September 2013 as per BBC Sport.

“Very proud to be voted player of the month!,” Bakambu wrote on Twitter.

Bakambu has scored 45 goals in 101 appearances for Villarreal since his move to Spain in August 2015.

The lethal striker has deservedly been named the best player in the Spanish La Liga for the month of October.

Bakambu, who was born in France to DR Congolese parents, has been in top form for Villarreal this season having scored 12 goals in 17 matches in all competitions.

The former Sochaux player grabbed a brace against Kazajistan’s Astana in an UEFA Europa League game on Thursday, before scoring against Sevilla in a La Liga match on Sunday.

La Liga announced that the DR Congo international was the October Player of the Month after scoring six goals during the month.

A statement read: “Cedric Bakambu named LaLiga Santander Player of the Month for October.

“The Villarreal forward picks up this accolade for the first time in his career after netting six times last month.

“Villarreal CF striker Cedric Bakambu has been named the LaLiga Santander Player of the Month for October.

“His goalscoring exploits last month helped Villarreal soar up the table into the Europa League qualification spots.

“The France-born Congolese star’s six strikes in October have seen him receive the award for the first time in his career.

“The 26-year-old scored a hat-trick against SD Eibar in a 3-0 victory, struck twice in a 2-1 away win at Girona FC and once in Villarreal’s 4-0 thrashing of UD Las Palmas.”

The 26-year-old collected the accolade before Villarreal’s clash with Sevilla on Sunday.

The prolific marksman has a good season thus far in the colours of his Spanish club Villarreal, who are punishing for a top four finish in the La Liga.

Bakambu, 26, has found the back of the net eight times in 11 La Liga games and he’s among the top goalscorers in the league.

Only FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi (12) and Valencia forward Simone Zaza (9) have scored more La Liga goals than the DR Congolese international this season.

Bakambu’s exploits for the Yellow Submarine have not gone unnoticed according to latest reports coming out of Spain.

Spanish media outlet Marca have reported that West Ham United are one of a number of English Premier League clubs interested in signing in-form Bakambu during the January transfer window.

Marca says that the Hammers made an offer for the frontman in the summer, but were unable to match the price tag put on the centre-forward’s head.

The London-based outfit are now ready to revive their interest in Bakambu, who was a key player for DR Congo during their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The report adds that the Hammers’ English top flight rivals West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United are also keeping tabs on the France-born player.

It remains to be seen whether Villarreal will agree to sell one of their most prized assets midway through the current 2017/18 campaign.

The prolific forward was born in Vitry-sur-Seine, France to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) parents and he decided to play for the European country’s youth national teams.

Bakambu represented France up to under-20 level, totalling 8 goals in 38 games and winning the 2010 UEFA European Championship for the under-19s between 2009, and 2011.

In 2015, the Congolese Association Football Federation and DRC head coach Florent Ibenge convinced Bakambu to switch his international allegiance to the Central African side.

Bakambu has since estabslished himself as one of DRC’s key players having scored seven goals in 16 appearances for Ibenge’s side to date.

According to Jeune Afrique, Ibenge’s contract with the Congolese Association Football Federation is set to expire in December 2017.

“Yes, we are aware. We’ll see. It’s not us who decides,” Bakambu told the publication.

“This will be played out at the level of the Federation. Florent Ibenge called me in selection.

“I became one of the executives. It’s a status I’m assuming,” he continued.

“But as far as the coach’s question is concerned, it’s not for me to talk about that.”

Bakambu, 26, scored twice during DRC’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

He has also scored two goals in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) striker has started the 2017/18 season like a house on fire for both his country and club.

Bakambu has incredibly netted 11 goals in 12 competitive appearances for DRC and his Spanish club, Villarreal CF.

The Ivry-sur-Seine-born forward began the campaign slowly failing to score in Villarreal’s first two La Liga matches which were against Real Sociedad and Real Betis.

However, Bakambu rediscovered his scoring form against Deportivo Alaves on match day three – as his brace inspired the Yellow Submarines to a 3-0 away win last month.

The following month, the former Sochaux FC frontman remarkably scored six goals in three consecutive La Liga matches which were against Eibar, Las Palmas and Girona.

To date Bakambu has hit the back of the net eight times in nine league appearances for Villarreal, who are placed sixth on the La Liga standings.

The Yellow Submarines, who are three points behind third-placed Real Madrid, are looking to finish in the top four and qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

There’s doubt that Javier Calleja’s side will stand a good chance of achieving their target this season if Bakambu stays in injury free and he maintains his goal scoring form.

Bakambu, who was born in France to Congolese parents, is also one of DRC’s key players as they look to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals which will be hosted by Russia.

The 26-year-old prolific marksman has netted twice in DRC’s last three World Cup qualifiers and he will look inspire his nation to victory against Guinea in Kinshasa next weekend.

The Leopards need to win by at least three clear goals and hope that current Group A leaders, Tunisia lose to Libya in Rades on the final match day of the CAF World Cup qualifiers.
